We work with DF because we enjoy it, for various reasons.  It's good to have fresh blood...er...new faces in the community. Welcome.
(Oh, by the way - I'm one of the sane ones around here. Be careful who you talk to.  Most of the other sane people are no longer among us, or have joined the insane. Even if I'm not posting, rest assured I'm haunting the boards.)

I'm also comparatively sane, but that's mostly because I'm more or less new here. I fiddle with this game because my computer won't run any of the ones that've come out. I also fiddle with a few other games in my spare time.

The original game got boring. I just simply added my own taste to it. I haven't released anything yet, but I'm getting increasingly better at it everyday. I do it also because it's a good stress reliever (except when something doesn't work and takes for ever to find the reason), and it's a good way to express creativity.

You might call me one of the less sane people... I edit DF because it's much easier (and FAR quicker) to edit than other games, and there's plenty of evidence that DF is quite as capable for making eye-candy as new games like JA.
Case in point (timewise):
My secret base entry (on the main DF-21 page) was hammered out in roughly 3 weeks, almost all of that in the last week (and I still had time to eat, shower, sleep, and leave the house!)
My JK work has, well, been in the works for a few months now, and you can see all of it in under 5 minutes. I won't comment on my other DF projects, though, as I have DELETED some 10,000 sectors from them combined...
