This is the best solution I've found so far to running DOS DF on Intel Mac:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/

I've only tested it with the demo because I don't have the full PC game yet but the demo seems to work perfectly, stereo midi music and everything. There are only minor slowdowns sometimes.

I found DOSBox runs much faster on my iMac (1.83GHz Intel Core Duo) WITHOUT the optional prefs file included with the binary distribution. Using DOSBox is easy: at the DOS prompt type mount c ~ to mount your Mac OS X home directory in DOS, then cd c: and navigate to a folder containing the DOS game you want to run. I keep a DOS folder in my home directory and make sure everything in it has an 8-char name so it's easy to type. Press Option-Return to toggle full screen. It couldn't be much simpler!

It's great to have a solution for this that doesn't involve Windows.

Its strange how things come full circle! Mac DF was superior to PC DF and now the PC version is the only one we can get to run on a current gen Mac...and the DOS version won't run on a current Vista PC.

Sad but true.

For comparison I tried setting up MS-DOS in Parallels and loaded DF. It ran much faster and smoother than in DOSBox but, alas, no sound. None of the sound drivers in IMUSE recognize whatever sound card Parallels is emulating.

Oh the DOS one runs fine on Vista... inside Virtual PC. Of course Virtual PC won't install on the less pricy Vista editions, like the one my brother has. I guess he'll be a VMWare fan then, since theirs installs on anything. Someone at MS must be retarded or something...?

Dark Forces probably also runs well in VMWare. Runs not as well in QEMU and DOSBox.

Magic_Al: Parallels emulates Windows XP, yes? If so, you'll NEVER get sound through that, and even if you do, it'll suck. XP's DOS emulation sucks, no way around it. There are programs that try, but they don't really work well.

I just installed DOSbox on my new MacBook (Intel 2GHz + 1Gb RAM) and Dark Forces runs smoothly (but so far I've only played Secret Base).

Can you imagine that recently I bought an old Compaq laptop with its Windows 98 restore CD for 10 bucks just to play DF and get back to WDFUSE but I never managed to get the sound effects playing! Only the game music played although I tried all possible hardware configurations in the settings.

And I bought iEmulator for the Mac this week. It was cheap so I didn't mind spending a few dollars for it. I never managed to install Windows because all my Windows CDs (95, 98, 2000, XP) are upgrade versions and it fails when I have to swap the CDs so the installation process can check the previous version for license... Sad

Now I just need to install Wine, or rather Darwine, for WDFUSE, but I'm quite stuck with its current (under-)developped version unfortunately.

I just got a 13-inch MacBook Pro running on Snow Leopard and gave a try to the latest developments of Wine. I installed it using MacPorts and instructions on the following page: http://davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/
Hooray! I can now easily work with Wdfuse on a Mac! And play levels using DosBox. It may look like such a hassle, but both emulators really install easily and run fine on a Mac now. Once installed, they launch fast.

I may have to give that a try, I hardly ever use my XP partition anymore after I installed Windows 7 on my laptop. I may even delete that partition entirely since DF was the only reason I had it to begin with. This would present a more acceptable solution.
