I have experienced these programs before. Although the Windows Taskmanager can eliminate them, they are still a pain. I liken those advertising companies to virus writers; they take advantage of an unforseen virtual back door, and victimize many people. However, these companies are in it for money. I would very much like to see Microsoft fix the "Windows Messenger", so that it can still be used for intranet communication, and doesn't grant any access to external sources.

May I say the word "firewall"?

Why certainly... I was just wishing Microsoft would include one in XP home edition... I haven't ever experienced this on any PRIVATE computer, only at a public terminal on campus. That way, if XP home comes with a firewall already as part of the normal setup, that would deter most advertising companies from trying.

The firewall is not included in XP Home? I've never seen Home myself, but from how people talk about it I've always assumed the firewall is there. Can you show anything that can confirm it is not?

The firewall is there, and it's really crappy.

The Messenger service really ought to be off by default.

Oh, I know the firewall is bad. My point is still valid, that if it is enabled, the Messenger service is no longer a problem.

Me, I disable both the built in firewall and the Messenger service, and install a third party firewall instead - and on another computer.

How do you disable the built in firewall? I have two other firewalls, and I think the WIN XP one is causing me trouble.

Uncheck "Internet Connection Firewall" on your network card.

Agreed. I use Zonealarm and my router's (hardware? dunno, it's a cheapo consumer-grade router) firewall.

Mm, yes, ZoneAlarm is cheap, but is also known to be incompatible with certain popular Internet services. But as long as it doesn't cause you any problems, it's a good choice.

To expand on Mattias' explanation:

Go into Control Panel | Network Connections...

Select the modem/network card you use to connect to the internet. (If you use multiple, do this for each of them:)

Right click it and choose properties. Go to the last tab and check the firewall option. Now, to set up extra ports, you can go to Advanced. I beleive most older DirectPlay games are set up be default though.

To disable the messanger service:

Go to Start | Run and enter "services.msc" and hit OK.

Find the Messanger service in the list. Right click it and choost properties.

Find the drop down box that says "Automatic". If it says Manual or Disabled, it's turned off. If not, select Disabled.

Push the Stop button to stop it immediately.

Press OK and close Services.
