This place reeks of DEATH! Whats going on?
.
When is the final version of DTIII going to be released? Is there any hope for DT4?
.
How about projects such as Lava Planet? 3rd Death Star? Jedi Crystal? Or even the infamous CAKEWALK?? Whos doing what? Is this the end??

See my response about DTIII in the other thread. DTIV is well on its way to being done. I played a near-beta version last week. Barry will release it without music and cutscenes, however. Matt H is far too busy to contribute at this time.

Aren't you a little too busy yourself?

Well I'm back (I probably didn't make enough of an impression to be remembered but...) And I may release the level I was working on unfinished.

Marley! Hi there. Sure I remember you. I believe you had made an enjoyable contribution to the DFverse...I just can't remember the title of your level.

Just did a quick search because I couldn't remember the name, either.
Was it Marley's Demo? (He was also working on a project called "Imperial Fortress" a while back, but I can't seem to dredge up any info on it.)

Yeah, there was a real nice demo with a hanger at the top of a cliff. Looked great, glad you're thinking of continuing the effort!

I guess so. that's why I'm pushing to get DTIV released soon. After that I think I may retire from DF modding. It's been 10 years, and I feel like a change.

Im getting allittle worried about this site too. It has been allitle slow often. Not only with the level editing, but with the responses as well. One of us should put a pole up. But I might suggest that we'd start doing some kind of advertisings to encourage more editors or viewers.

I'm thinking that, if the projects pages were spruced up and made a little bit easier for the author to edit, maybe there might be a bit of a surge of editing activity. (Funny that I'm the one saying it, what with my also being the one who should take care of that.)
In the past, editing contests have helped revive some interest, too, but the numbers are literally dwindling... with the last competition, only Matt H entered -- and a heckuvan entry he gave us!
What do you guys think I could do (or we could all do) to maybe drum up some interest?

I Still say that we should advertise for game editors outside of this sight, I know it won't be easy knowing that it is a DOS editing. But I can volunteer as a new editor.
I wont have too much time editing these things, but I might add to the interest. Besides that, I have cartooning skills. One other thing. would N E one be of so kind to direct me to the program or editor to DF. I'm having a hard time finding it. If you can put a link on this page that will b great.

I made a cool Dark Forces .LEV parser for .NET, as well as a cooler WDFUSE-esque map control for .NET. I have yet to figure out how to turn a clicked point on the grid into a sector or line (object/vertex would be easy).
As soon as I get off my lazy arse I shall make an editor to BEAT THEM ALL!
That reminds me... I have a very nice private alpha of CDark (would be the best editor of all time if it didn't crash every time I tried to open the File menu) which I can't distribute. Mattias needs to go and finish it or open source it or something.

(LOL) Somebody brings up Cakewalk.
Wow, well, aside from it's creator having this thing called 'real life' and 'a job' and a ridiculous hobby called 'airsoft' getting in the way of DF stuff, it's going good.
AKA: not.
Some day I do plan to actually finish freaking Operation: Cakewalk. Maybe as a last nail in the Dark Forces coffin, kind of thing.
It would be fitting that my terrible joke level kills everything left.

I guess I'll have to release what got done of the levels I was working on. Neither DF or any editors work under OSX with an Intel processor, so unless one day I start editing in Windows this will be the end of the DF line for me.

Geoffrey you should definiitely release your DF stuff. Some of the stuff you've shown me is among the best design I've ever seen in a Dark Forces level. Let other people see your talents.

Sheesh! It's been so long since an upload of any sort that I had to look around for the right page.
Anyway, give this a go, GS: http://df-21.net/downloads/upload.html
Looking forward to it!

Ah, should've mentioned that: when I tried it gave me an error:
-----
Bad Directory
The directory you specified:
$SAVE_DIRECTORY = "/home/virtual/df-21.net/var/www/html/upload";
is invalid. This problem is caused by one of the three following reasons:
The directory doesn't exist. Make sure that this directory is a complete path name, not a URL or something similar. It should look similar to /home/username/public_html/uploads
The directory isn't writable. Make sure that this directory is writable by all users. At your UNIX command prompt, type chmod 777 /home/virtual/df-21.net/var/www/html/upload
The directory you specified isn't really a directory. Make sure that this is indeed a directory and not a file.

Fixed, thanks for pointing that out.
Possibly due to the same change to the server config that took out the forums.
Upload away, looking forward to it

Okay, done. Anyone who decides to try it, remember this is not designed to be playable. In particular, use teleport to get to the start around 0,0,0 coordinates. Anyone deciding to use this, feel free!

Received and now front page news!
The download link is here: http://df-21.net/downloads/demos/mantell.zip
Nice work here, GS. You have a knack for incorporating artificial structure into natural environments -- and, as always, an eye for good, realistic architecture. (Realistic in the sense of being based in the Star Wars reality, at least.) It was really fun to go running around in here.
Since you're short a working editor, I took the liberty of putting the player near the Outlander. As of now, you start off looking diagonally across that room, with the ship dominating the front and left of the screen and the stacked crates (nice subtleties, GS!) on the right. If you'd like the player starting off in some other way, just let me know and I'll break out my newly-dusted-off copy of WDFUSE.
Anyway, good job! Not being greedy, but would you happen to have any other work hanging around the ol' hard drive?

Why are you emulating a PPC for the Mac DF when there's a perfectly good Intel x86 DF out there (IE the DOS one)?
Get a virtualizer... not emulator, there is a difference, and it is in SPEED. Virtualizers can only run on top of the chip they emulate, but they are optimized to do so. Emulators have to do translation work and are thus many times slower.
I don't know what software is for Macs, but you need something that you can install DOS in and that emulates a sound card Dark Forces can use.
This reminds me... I need to update my PC guide one of these days. VMWare and VirtualBox don't run Dark Forces satisfactory (couldn't get sound working VMWare without crashing, VirtualBox doesn't support any kind of sane sound card at all) and QEMU runs it just about as well as DosBox (since they're both emulators).

I like Mac DF because I've grown up with it and DOS DF is lousy...it's on DOS and the demo was enough for me The music in DOS cracks me up every time -- that and the extra-low res graphics. Actually Prince of Persia DOS is even worse but that's off topic hehehe... Anyway, I've just been testing how well these options are working with my brother's Intel iMac -- I don't have an Intel Mac yet myself. Believe me, I fully understand the difference between virtualization and emulation. It's up to the individual to choose how they want to use DF in today's world of computers. For those who still want to use Dark Forge and the DF Gold package, it's good to know that it's still an option on the Intel Macs. As chipsets get faster in the coming year or two Mac DF will run just fine again -- just in time for when I finally have to move on from my trusty G4, last Mac I'll have that boots into OS 9...

I think you guys should continue the Dark Forces saga using one of the newer engines like Torque, Source, or Unreal, as a community project. Since cost is probably a concern, nearly all the software used for developing in Torque is completely free, and surprisingly powerful. I would totally jump on that bandwagon!
WHAT SAY YOU??
