|
|
Hey all,
I've tried to get DF to work using the instructions given in the article on this website. Unfortunately, none of the techniques work.
The closest to working thus far has been to do that batch file directory method, where you "create" drive P: (Sorry for my computer illiteracy). Anyways, I type in "dark," and it begins to load, but then states "ERROR: Unable to load LOCAL.MSG" When I try to run imuse.exe, I get an error stating that it can't write on the CD-ROM. Any tips?
Thanks in advance!

Have you tried actually installing it normally and running it like that? :p

Let's see:
1. Assuming you have a newer version of DF, use the 'DF95' autorun startup thingy to install DF. Of course, take the maximum install (a petty ~64MB)
2. To get the no-cd thing to work, change the cd seting file (I forgot what it's called) in the DARK directory, then change the letter specified to whatever drive (typically C) you installed DF on.
3. Next, open up the DF disk itself with explorer. Copy the file "CD.ID", or whatever it's called, and paste it directly onto the Hard Drive, outside of all folders.
4. If you then go to the "command prompt" (try "run", then type COMMAND). Then, go to the "DARK" directory, then start up typing DARK. The game should run well now, save for sound. please talk with others about sound issues, as I am fortunate enough to avoid them...

You really should get a real OS, though.
Acording to Mattias, that is a real OS... (he counts NT, 2K, and XP) Being a "real OS", Windows 2100- I mean Windows 2000, should have no problems whatsoever... I guess that's wrong...
For ultimate DF experience, I reccomend Mac OS (you get 640x400!). If you're stuck with Windows, I reccomend a 32-bit, not 64-bit version... I play DF on a computer with WinME...

Thanks for the replies. I have an older version of DF, actually. I bought it around the time when it first came out, and I wanted to play it some more again. Unfortunately, the game won't install in Win2k. If I try to install, the executable either freezes up or it says there's a problem with jedi.cfg. So I followed the instructions given at http://df-21.net/articles/install.html, but these didna work.
Thanks again for any responses!!

Well, I got this crazy idea this morning to dig out good old Dark Forces, since I've been hogging comp time with Jedi Academy for....*doesn't know how long*....well you get the idea. Anyway, I happened upon this site and went WOOT I CAN RUN IT NOW.
I can't.
I followed the article's steps and i run the batch file as it says (c:\dfrun in my case), and it displays a response to all of the lines in the batch, then when I try to use the command "dark" it says it is invalid.
Help?

I know. Since he didn't quite answer, I repeated the question. Also, now it's Apex who has the problem.

Hmm... Perhaps the article should be modified, so that everybody knows that it is INSTALLING and running Dark Forces...

*Mutters about...well never mind...*
Anyway, I wouldn't be telling you this if I hadn't tried
INSTALLING
the game first...
So obviously yes I tried that, it shows a gray DOS prompt with Dark Forces Installer Utility 1.2 something or other at the top and won't respond.

Dammit! The G4 I broke earlier works again! And I'm still having the same memory issue!
Here's the rundown.
The cutscenes and everything work fine, but when I play the actual game, the whole gameplay is choppy, just as if it were running under virtual memory. But since OS X doesn't support Vitual Memory, I'm completely stumped. I have no clue what the problem is.
Does Anyone else here use Mac OS 9 classic as well? How do you get around this particular problem?
Oh... and switching the startup disk is how I broke it the first time.

YES! I got it! Here's how in case someone else has the same problem:
Follow all the steps on http://df-21.net/articles/install.html
While digging around in the disk, use the BBOTMKR.EXE to make a boot disk (assuming you have a floppy drive, you do don't you...?)
Remove the disk, restart your computer with the boot floppy in the drive
Leave the floppy in, open command prompt, and run C:\dfrun (The batch file you made in the article's steps)
It'll work for a sec, then you'll end up with P:\DARK\ as the line
Type dark and hit enter, it runs, but it might be without sound. (working on that now )
*Update*
Run the sound program mentioned in the article also, so far it gets music *or* sounds, not both for some reason, still working...

I'm not sure why you think that, but the VM system in OSX is much more advanced and intelligent than the one in OS9. For one, it helps us get away from the stupid "memory partition" junk that the classic MacOS imposed on applications.

My setup for DOS DF is under Windows ME, under the "DOS prompt". I'm not sure if som versions of Windows may run DOS programs under virtual memory, but that definitely could cause problems, considering old programs were written to use only the much faster main memory, unlike newer programs...
Another key thing to look out for is having every file in the optimum place. If I remember, DF searches for the files in the order:
1.The main "DARK" directory.
2.The .GOB file specified (if any).
3.The main .GOB file.
4.The CD-ROM drive specified in the CD.ID file(or whatever it's called). A full install SHOULD prevent this part from ever happening, but it might be a good idea to make sure that all files are in the instalation folder on the hard drive. The only file DF should be writing to AT ALL is the file that stores player data... I don't remember what it's called, though, as I haven't seriously looked into my DARK folder in months...
