I noticed on the lesser know Dark Forces Thread that it mentioned that the DF FME/WAX Editor 1.0 FAT cannot create waxes yet I can prove it wrong. I was fooling around with DF FME/WAX Editor 1.0 FAT for I am a Mac user and I figured out how to create waxes on it without freezing up!
You start by extracting a wax and then using Photoshop to change it. Then normaly you go back to the editor and click build new wax, and when you try it in the game it freezes up. However, when a wax is selected click action 0, then click attributes and set frame rate. If you do it on your wax that has already been built and a wax that you just opened you notice that attributes frame rate numbers are different for each action, such as action one for you wax might be 2 yet on the original games wax thta it was based off of it might be 12, you must make them12 in this case to fix it. You just have to make sure that the frame rate of the original games waxes are the same as your wax. You must do this for all the actions.

Yeah, I found that out too. I always wondered why my custom weapon bullets always animated slowly. I always believed it to be a problem with the game trying to read the new WAX file. But then it clicked, the framerate. I changed it and all of them worked just fine.
Yet another trick learned on the long road of DF editing.
