I have occasional pauses (like David Bowie between his goodbye-concerts), but usually I'm here.

Dude, I would definitely look forward to lava planet on DarkXL . . . the new dual adjoins, vertical adjoins, water depth, things like that, would really make that an awesome level . . . if you're still working on it, of course . . .

On-and-off, frankly. What I have initially planned and drawn a thousand years ago proved to be a bit too ambitious in scale - at least then I didn't take in count that I'd get older and have a job now. Very Happy But I'm considering releasing its first part, which is more or less finished, after a bit of polishing. The trouble is, as such it does not have a complete, sensible storyline. Yet.

I'm looking forward to DarkXL as well - in fact, it's a good motivation booster to get these thousand-year projects finished before 3200 AD.

I'm still around. Finished college now, so hoping to follow in Patrick's footsteps and get a career out of this.

Good luck with that Barry Smile

I just wish you were still doing projects for DF and you've always been a phenomenal help to me.

Ditto.

Have you released anything for other games, by the way? In which aspect of game design are you looking for a job?

Not much at all really. A bit of JK and a tiny bit of JO, none of which was released. I'd love to get in to level design. Architecture and stuff. Maybe texture art as well.

Good luck! Actually, I'm considering a gaming industry career as well (soundtrack production, specifically), and have offered it to a few development teams, but for now, nothing to report. It seems that the competition in this field is über-fierce.

Regarding the Lava Planet, I've written a tiny status report about it:

Yay, soundtracks! I can't wait to hear them. Fortress Quadrigon's music was amazing, along with the awesome architecture in it. DarkXL will make it even easier to implement decent soundtracks into your level Smile

I am looking forward to that opportunity too. Of course, there will certainly be a "classic", Dark.Exe-friendly version with good old VOCs as well, and that one is still a priority. As someone here well said (Fenwar, I think), adapting the level to run well only under DarkXL would miss that classic gaming point.

After my extensively long hiatus from this website in 2005-2007, I never knew you got seriously sick! Shocked

What happened to you? Did you get really bad pneumonia or something?

No, actually it was neurological in nature - I was progressively losing muscle control. It looked pretty grim for a while as it forecasted paralysis, but fortunately, it turned out to be simpler and entirely curable (though quite slowly). I'm healthy now, have set myself up again (job, home, etc), so I can resume the mission. Smile

No Patrick, not an editor. An actual custom engine to run the game Very Happy

I think the confusion comes from mentioning editing tools coming in the future. Just to be clear, DarkXL is a custom engine made to faithfully run Dark Forces in modern OS's with hardware acceleration and improved control schemes (mouse-look), similar to modern Doom sourceports such as JDoom (Doomsday). Optional additional features will be added, some of which will be designed for new levels (slopes, dual adjoins, etc.). You can read about it more in the forums.

Where the confusion comes in is that in order to make Dark Forces editing easier and to enable the new features for those that want to use them (with a way of running in "classic" mode for those that don't), a built in editing suite will be implemented. But this won't really see much work until DarkXL can run much more of Dark Forces correctly.

I'm going to be honest, compared to modern sector editing tools - such as the Build editor and modern Doom editors - WDFUSE isn't very user friendly or fun to use. I can use it ok, but with a proper editor levels can be built much more quickly and the process can be much more enjoyable. So eventually we'll get modern features - WYSIWYG 3D editing/preview mode, much better sector editing/creation tools, instant testing from anywhere in the level and alot more.Smile

Anyway enough rambling about DarkXL in the Roll Call topic... If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.

Right, right. Actually CDark was both an engine and editor, although I only had access to the editor portion. Anyways, good show!

Oops, I didn't know too much about CDark, except for the notorious person who was creating it...

Now *there* was a debacle. Fortunately, unlike the unfortunate soul working on CDark, it appears that lucius has not succumbed to the Dark Side. Smile

That's really not the reason I said that, I had a few issues with the guy back in the day... Unfortunate as it may seem. And as much as I tried to understand him, there were a couple times where I would lose my temper.

Oh well, It's in the past now. Although it would be pretty ironic if it was Mattias working on DarkXL (I know he's not... I hope... Razz . That would be the biggest kick in my arse).

Well hopefully its pretty obvious that its not.Smile

Actually that whole debacle is one of the reasons that I waited until I did before originally mentioning DarkXL. I wanted to show that DarkXL is more then another attempt doomed to ruin...

I think you've more than proved you're up to the task at this point in time, Lucius Wink

(and it is pretty obvious you're not Mattias, I don't think he'd EVER reside in America no matter the circumstances)
