I don't know if I missed anything on this because i don't get too much time to read through all the threads but, is DT still going? Is there going to be a DT5?

The original original plan was for DT5 to be made for Jedi Academy. I think the new plan is to never ever ever do any DT work ever again.

What was that Xizor's Palace level they released with the Beyond the Ancient stuff? I never got a chance to check it out, and the only copy I had was on my now crashed hard drive . . .

With the amount of work and effort they put into it, I'm not surprised they'd be done with it for good. But who knows?

That's not what I meant, I have really slow internet, so I don't feel like downloading it right now.

Sadly, I could never get the included Palace.gob to work properly. It always had some sort of bizarre memory problem whenever I gave it a go.
Shame too, as the TIE fighter ending at part 4 is a build up to... nothing.

Why is that they wont do the DT work again? Something with the copyright? And does that mean no kind of sequels as well?

YOU try working on four large projects for a 13 year old game without wanting to move on to something different.

A shame really. I need to catch up with the series, and I'm curious to see how the Palace.gob looks as last time I saw it, maybe 4 years ago, if not 5, it had a lot of promise.

yeah, I guess, considering how time consuming it is looking at DT4, still...the suspense of it all.

I'm so enthused about DarkXL I'm waiting to play the last couple DT chapters through that rather than mess with Dark Forces/DOSBox. With crashing and glitches I got stuck early in DT3 and DT4 and never got back to them. I was spoiled by the high-res Mac version of DF, which I can no longer run, and the DOS version is a step backwards for me. DarkXL goes forward and will render the DT saga the way it deserves to be seen.
In light of DarkXL, perhaps the idea of doing DT5 for Jedi Academy makes less sense than doing it for Dark Forces, with DarkXL in mind. I think DarkXL has some potential to rejuvenate Dark Forces editing because results will look much more satisfying. Building the same worlds in full 3D and HD for Jedi Academy seems to exhaust many more man-hours without actually producing more playable content. There's something to be said for DF's relative simplicity -- it's doable.

I agree, it's always been so much easier to make a level in DF than in the newer 3D engines. Mapping in high-detail 3D games takes soooo much more time and effort. And still, despite DF's lower graphical appeal, I've seen so much more work put into DF levels than anything else . . . I've played a lot of mods for a lot of games, but DF levels like Dark Tide and Ironfort are still at the top of my list.
It's just too bad the creators of Dark Tide never got a chance to finish the series, I was really hoping for a good ending . . . I wish we could contact them somehow. Maybe if they heard about DarkXL one of them would eventually wrap up Xizor's Palace and complete the best DF series ever made . . .

Ditto. I actually "tried" making a level for JA last year. And when I say tried, I mean I loaded the program once, poked around for a bit, quit it, and never opened the application ever again.
I've had the most fun making DF levels because even with its limitations, it can still get incredibly detailed and best of all, with a little practice becomes incredibly easy.
And thanks to the DarkXL project, I can rekindle my beloved hobby

What's interesting is that will just a few more features -- most of which were in Outlaws -- you can make architecture that is very 3D looking in a sector engine with little extra work. The main problem is that with Outlaws, only 1 vertical adjoin per-sector was possible. When I implement the extended feature in DarkXL, a top and bottom adjoin will both be possible which really opens up the architectural possibilities (when used in addition to the other features that Outlaws did add to the Jedi engine such as slopes and dual adjoins).
It'll be fun to see what levels people come up with. So who's making the need Dark Tide quality epic?

I can't speak for Patrick or Barry, but it is doubtful that there will ever be a DT5.

What about at least a short story? I would be satisfied with that.

I'm not sure I would, but maybe a script/outline and dialog recordings that could be used by someone else to build it someday?

I just think leaving things the way they are now is kind of anti-climactic, I would love something that gave it a sense of closure in some way as I know DTV is out of the question.

Where do you download Dark Tide 4? I don't see it on the DT website.
