I don't get why people don't just use something better. 100mb upload limit there.

I still haven't finalized mine yet. Trying to find a high-res version of the DF font for my buttons diverted me into some serious font research for when we get around to high-res replacements for text and user interface throughout the game. Besides finding a satisfactory replacement for "DF Font" (which I suspect is custom and doesn't exist at larger sizes) I'm collecting the actual fonts used in the movies (100% you-can-overlap-with-a-screenshot match) and in other Dark Forces/Jedi Knight media, and I'll be posting a Star Wars/Dark Forces font guide at some point. Let's just say whathefont.com is the greatest tool ever. I'll try to get back on task tonight.

Explanation of button size: the reason they are so big is for consistency with the size of buttons in the game. I calculated the relative height thusly:
As a legal contingency, here's a 100% lawyer-friendly version, in the unlikely event DarkXL must be distributed with absolutely no Lucas-owned trademarks or images.

Looks good Magic_Al. I have no problem with the button size, I was just concerned about the pixelation before when contrasted with the rest of the screen. You've fixed that and it looks good to me.
So the next step is to get the final versions from the others and I'll do the poll.
Thanks for the excellent work!

Well, thanks to some rather nice adjustments from MagicAl, I now have a superfinal version with hi-res buttons!
(Yes, this is my absolute final submission)

I must say, the buttons are amazing.
I'm still mildly annoyed by the title's coloring . . . maybe I'm just overly picky
I just feel the urge to open it up in Gimp and see what it would look like in dark red . . . but it's up to you, leave it the way it is if nobody else thinks we should change it. It's just a minor detail.
EDIT: Here's a rough example of what I would change (the title color):
Like I said, it's just my opinion, so don't change it unless somebody else agrees that the title is too . . . light. It's just a minor thing, the title screen still looks awesome the way you have it now

lol I was going to suggest Playstation support... jokingly. It's probably not worth the effort unless there's changes between it and the DOS version that would be interesting to play in an environment with a proper control scheme. Some of the text file formats have been converted to binary in order to compress them (maybe the PSX cd drive was slow?). The new format for 3dos at least was mostly trivial to figure out by looking at one side-by-side with the DOS version one.

That reminds me . . . lucius, I know a lot of newer games support the Xbox 360 controller. Will DarkXL eventually also support this, in a later version? I know it's possible to just use the controller with a simple joystick driver, but it's buggy and most of the buttons don't work properly.

If DarkXL will have Input support of any kind later in development I wouldn't doubt the 360 controller working perfectly for this.

A few more tweaks: made button frame translucent so it looks less bulky/more modern, finished button mousedowns, completely redid the starfield, enlarged the Moldy Crow, touched up Kyle a little more. I think it's really done now.
One unanswered question is whether buttons should have a mouseover action. I've made mouseover images but I don't know if they should used because the behavior would be inconsistent with similar buttons in the game. However the menus of all the Jedi Knight games have mouseover effects. The red button border indicates which button the Enter/Return key is mapped to, consistent with the game. If the mouseover images are used the border around each button would light up green.

Magic_Al, I wasn't planning on mouse over because its not used by the rest of the UI.

The latest one is great EXCEPT for the ships and the lens flares. They don't serve any purpose. I would just remove them. They're just unnecessary noise in the image.
The rest of the collage is nicely done and fits the style of Star Wars posters.

OK, I'm totally confused. If those two bright things are lens flares, then where's the bright object that is causing them?

[I'm sure I posted this yesterday but I obviously failed...]
I like Pumpkin's offering, although I can see it as more of an animated intro to the game - with the wireframe drawing and zooming in on various bits, little green text readouts scrolling past and so forth... anyone?
I guess it would require a techno soundtrack and moves away from the classic Star Wars feel a bit. Whereas Al's screen would fit happily after the existing DF intro has rolled.
Lots of great work going into all of these though.

The secret ingredient is sampling stars from HDTV screencaps of The Empire Strikes Back instead of from standard-def DVD. The starfields in the classic trilogy were achieved photographically with an inside-out planetarium contraption. No video format can reproduce how stunning thousands of pin-pricks of light on an otherwise unexposed negative look when projected on a big screen, but at least high-definition video doesn't lose as many stars between pixels. In my collage, the ESB starfield is layered on top of itself at half-size for even more distant stars. Color is added with a blurred noise layer in the same color palette as the starfield bitmaps from Dark Forces, so the styles of the game and movies are combined.
