|
|
I did a quick hack of the winning icon into the current DarkXL exe. The Vista icon should work but I could not test it, and the tool I used to update the icon is not Vista-icon aware (though it shouldn't matter). So if someone could check it out with 256x256 icon size in 24/32-bit desktop color depth and make sure it looks awesome and has 8-bit transparency around the edges, that would be great.
Here's how it looks at 64x64x32 on my very dark desktop (sorry):
(The shortcut arrow blurryness is not my fault, blame MS.)
Here's just the icon: http://junk.mzzt.net/dark.ico
Here's DarkXL build 7f with the exe updated with the icon: http://junk.mzzt.net/DarkXL_AlphaDemo1_b7f.zip
If you download NOW you get the following FREE icon sizes and color depths at no additional charge:
64x64 4-bit
48x48 4-bit
32x32 4-bit
16x16 4-bit
64x64 8-bit
48x48 8-bit
32x32 8-bit
16x16 8-bit
256x256 32-bit (Vista-only)
64x64 32-bit
48x48 32-bit
32x32 32-bit
16x16 32-bit
For a limited time only, we have 8-bit transparency in all 32-bit icon sizes, as well as all standard icon sizes and bit depths used by the random icon I used as a template. Don't delay! Download TODAY!

Thanks The_Mega_ZZTer, the next build will have the icon built in. Thank you for putting it together.

Wisconsin?!
looks nice. I'll probably just download your new version the day after tomorrow when I move to a new computer, unless lucius releases the next build by then.

???
Mine has proper transparencies...
Also if you want a good dock icon the original 256x256 PNG should be sufficient (check the poll thread).
Your icon is also missing 64x64 sizes, and my 4-bit color ones look better. Not that that in itself is important.

Eh, I started doing the whole tv ad gag thing and I had to go all the way with it. I don't have anything against Wisconsin, just picked it at random.

Yours has aliasing on the smaller icons. It shows up when you choose to view icons below a certain size.
The 128x128 icon is for people who use dock software that doesn't read the Vista format, as is often the case.

The dock software I've used can read PNGs.
And other than 64x64 the smaller icons are directly taken from Al's own resizings, which looked better than my efforts (especially the 16x16 one).

Windows Icon format for XP and lower only supports 1-bit alpha channel. Jaggy edges can't be helped on round shapes.

Er, no, XP icons support 32-bit icons with an 8-bit alpha channel. Like, every single icon that comes with Windows XP uses it. Where have you been?

I have no idea where I was then, but I don't want to go back... I did indeed build the .ICO using 8-bit alpha channel images for all 32-bit sizes. So they should be 8-bit... I'll check them again.

When I imported the 32-bit ICOs for the icon, I used the System.Drawing.Image.FromFile method. It might be responsible for stripping off the 8-bit alpha. Importing them System.Drawing.Icon.New definitely preserved the entire alpha channel. The ZIP and icon have been updated.

Dude there's like half a dozen free icon utilities that would have done that for you. :psyduck:
