I have mixed feelings about this level (and series for that matter). There were some things that I absolutely loved and some things that made me absolutely cringe. But since I came into DF levels later than most people, I'll be as unbiased about some of my quirks as possible.

The best part of this level is its story. Everything about it tells a story, with every area having a purpose.

For a level of its time, it was one of the best (and as far as story goes, still is). But as with many older levels, it has started to show some age compared to most levels out these days. Mostly in the rooms and detail department.

I'll be fair in saying that a few areas presented some cool and interesting tecniques, but unfortunately, a lot of other places throughout the level were just a little too bland. Perhaps variations in sector altitude may have helped and/or different textures in some places.

I didn't have much issue with item and enemy placement and with the ancient temple feel, everything seemed to make sense.

One of the things I do have to praise for sure aside from the story is its puzzles. All were original, creative and gave that adventurous feel to the level that made me feel more like Indiana Jones.

So while the level does suffer from design flaws (which fortunately got better in later levels), the level excels in having a very narrative feel about it. This would be one of those levels I would LOVE to see possibly remade in a newer game.

7.5/10
