I know its in the early stages, but I couldn't resist trying to run custom levels with a batch file. It worked...sort of, but the level did eventually lock up and I had to restart my machine. Is there a way to get custom cutscenes to run at this point?

Silly Mac users. Someone needs to hurry up and port Wine. (Not to trivialize such a tremendous undertaking.) Although I swear there's already a port...

Mod support isn't really "supported" yet, I basically just exposed the ability to load custom gobs in its current state, to help those making new levels and so that custom levels can be tested as new features go in. At some point there will be much better mod support, including custom cutscenes.

However it does read the cutscene list file, but only from the main gob file. So getting custom cutscenes to work would be a lot of trouble right now - but it'll be properly supported eventually.

By "main" gob file, do you mean the cutscene list in DARK.GOB, or the list in the GOB started by a batch file? I ask because it seemed to be reading only the one from DARK.GOB.

That's what I meant, its reading it from DARK.GOB. This will be fixed in a future build.

Oh ok, that's good enough for me for now. I can always pack in my own list file into dark.gob for the purposes of my test. Great work with the sound syncing, btw. I wanted to get The Dark Tide's cutscenes up on YouTube, but I guess maybe I should wait til iMuse is working as well.

I am also running WinXP on an iMac with Boot Camp. There is a high degree of Mac DF fans!

Build 8b has been released. There are a variety of bug fixes. In addition if the Direct3D device cannot be initialized an error code will be reported. If you have this problem, please run it again and give me the error code from the log file.

Here is a list of fixes:
*Headlamp fades out as it runs out (25% and lower)
*Headlamp and IR goggles now take the appropriate amount of battery power - so they don't drain nearly as fast.
*The "scenery" logic has been implemented, so red lights in SecBase and other objects (such as the lamp posts in Talay) are destroyable.
In addition negative height is now supported for objects.
*Blaster shots no longer disappear too quickly or blow up on walls that are rendering sky.
*The blaster shots now have lighting that overbrightens slightly, so you can see the effect even on full bright walls.
*False "Goggles On" message is fixed.
*Some signs in Talay are stretched is fixed.
*The in-game font spacing now matches DF.
*When picking up the weapon super-charge, the correct message is now displayed.
*IR goggles now have the correct pickup sound.
*Enemies can no longer melee attack the player through walls or from different levels.
*Mousebots shouldn't pass through doors anymore.
*The sky is rendered correctly on pre-shader 2.0 hardware. This wasn't mentioned here, but the problem can be seen here: http://fps.maros.pri.ee/index.php_event=881 in some of the screenshots.
*The automap is better but not done.
*I was unable to reproduce the getting stuck in doors problem with this release, those having the problem, please retest.

Note that once the crash on startup problem is resolved, work will begin on Build 9. Of course more bugs will be addressed for that build as well as new features.

The new build can be downloaded from the first post in this thread.

A copy of the build with a new CoreLogics.as file has been uploaded. A debug message was being displayed, which is no longer displayed. If you downloaded before this message, try it again.

Edit: So I tried that one and still no joy Sad

It does the same thing where it says that it encountered a problem and needed to close.

Edit 2: Same problem as Marley apparently Confused

Dear lucius,

I have registered at the forums just so I could let you know how much I've wanted something like DarkXL. A lot of people drooling over this project can't let you know because they don't want to register on the forums for only one or two posts, but be ASSURED that this is the best piece of news I've ever heard of concerning Dark Forces. At least since Windows XP came out and screwed my DOS-based programs over... Confused

My only question is: will there be any chance that DarkXL will allow ACTUAL weapon modification, like new projectiles, damage/firerate modding, and so on?

Thanks a thousand times over, and please, PLEASE finish this project! TIE Defender Base, Mt. Kurek, Star's End: The Cloak, all in OpenGL mode with mouselook support... I am going to crawl back into my hole now... Very Happy Laughing

D3DERR_INVALIDCALL

Googling around it seems like an old ATI driver issue. Or possibly due to lucius not properly initializing his variables he's passing to CreateDevice.

I got the D3D error on build 8a using a GeForce, if that means anything.

Thanks for the comments.Smile

As for weapon modification, the weapons will eventually be scripted so you can modify it any way you want within the limitations of the system - which will have to support all the DF weapons.

That is correct, I did look it up right away but didn't want to talk about it until I looked at it more. I've done all the usual things like run with Debug Direct3D with maximum validation, break on error and so on. I've enabled the debug D3D layer, I've run it through the reference rasterizer. Anyway there are no notable warnings and no errors but I also know - from looking at what I changed from build 7f and the error code - that it is a problem with the presentation parameters. The main difference is that the video modes are now enumerated (instead of just using the values the user defined and using defaults for the rest), so at this point I'm going to say that the driver is reporting back some incorrect data during the enumeration process. It seems that I just have to sanity check that data (refresh rate is a prime culprit) and use sensible defaults if it is wrong.

I'm actually kind of bummed. I was thinking to myself "I have an uber-awesome new iMac that will run everything!" But I come to find out that it runs games that I thought would play really well at mediocre levels (Counter Strike: Source should run beautifully but I still getz teh framerate issues Sad ). Not to mention Jedi Knight and MotS doesn't even run in 3D Acceleration (which REALLY bummed me out). But of course the main reason (and kind of a silly one) I even run Windows at all is to play DF. So the fact that this build doesn't work kind of bums me out too.

But I know you can fix it Lucius, I have faith in you man!!! Wink

Thats really weird. I am running all my games just fine on my iMac Boot Camp. Although maybe its an ATI issue, mine has an Nvidia 8800. I am gonna download this build tonight and give it a shot.

The next build should fix the issue. It'll be a small build though. Basically I'll get this issue fixed before moving on to Build 9.

I could resist trying to get custom cutscenes running. I tweaked DARK.GOB to include the cutscene files from The Dark Tide and ran DarkXL. Strangely, even though DF's cutscenes ran flawlessly in DarkXL, The Dark Tide ones had bad sound (no voices and stuttering sound fx), and missing or stuck animations. I realize that this is a low priority at this point, but I thought I would mention it anyways. It was fun capturing the cutscenes in FRAPS though!

I haven't thoroughly tested every version of all the commands so I'm not suprised that it doesn't work right yet. There are also some game features that don't work right yet which is why not all the levels work right. At the moment, the project isn't far enough along to worry too much about mod issues yet. As more content is exposed, more features are implemented and more bugs are found and fixed, then mods will naturally work better as time goes on.

That said, however, DarkXL will have full mod support eventually and I fully intend to get the mods to work correctly - including cutscenes and other features.

Anyway thanks for trying it out - support will get better with time.Smile

You have that beefy 24" one don't you?

All of the lower iMacs use ATI Radeon cards and I just couldn't justify getting the 24" (don't have the money nor the need for one). I would have renewed faith in Apple if it allowed their computers a bit more customization aside from being able to give it more RAM.

I'd actually heard complaints about the Radeon cards not being compatible with some games so somehow this doesn't surprise me at all.

Edit: Heh, just to humor myself I checked out systemrequirementslab.com and checked out my system with various games. All of the ones I have (Current anyway) go way beyond recommendations (which blew my mind), heck this computer could technically run Bioshock!

And apparently my performance issue with CS:S was because I had vsync on, it looked funky.

On a related note, I find it bizarre that some games look better with vsync than others. And back on topic with the same note, I noticed that the vsync was much better with the current build than the last. I imagine that you'll be integrating the option for vsync or none in a future build Lucius?

There is a new build with some changes to the video mode enumeration code. It also outputs more data, so if it still fails it'll report things like the mode it attempted to use, the list of modes, refresh rates and so on. Hopefully this will allow me to narrow down the problem if not outright fix it.
So if it still fails, post the log files. Of course if it works, let me know about too.Smile

In addition I started working on the next major build and didn't disable a certain unfinished feature... so you'll find a suprise if you finish the Sewers level again. A virtual cookie for the first one to find the suprise.Smile Being incomplete, no need to report the new bugs yet. Razz

You can download the new build from the first post. It'll say Build 8c (just in case you read this before I can finish the update).
