Well, the picture made me think you were just being cute or something.

When I want to be sarcastic, I just try to post something so utterly ridiculous it cannot possibly be taken seriously.
Sometimes that doesn't quite work out in my favor...

I still don't understand what the percieved problem was. I could imagine people wanting a proper Jedi Knight XL (JediXL?) since there were a lot of fans. That doesn't mean I'll actually do it but asking doesn't hurt. I could just be dense today, though.

Nah, I was just in an overprotective mood, is all. I just don't want you getting too annoyed by all of these requests, when you've yet to finish work on either of your current projects. An honest mistake, really. I suppose I had put myself in your shoes, and when I get swamped with stuff, I tend to become a quitter. Kind of like when I tried finishing the Nashkel Mines in Baldur's Gate, and got swamped with enemies. I've yet to go back to that game...

Well I'm always swamped with things so no worries. Giving up is not in my nature.

It is a legitimate concern, I think I've said this before but I've witnessed programmers get so frustrated and bitter about constant requests (usually when they are in the form of complaints) that they respond to anyone even suggesting an addition or change to their work with hostility... so even though lucius is handling it fantastically (also no one here has been as, um, pushy as some forum-goers can be) I think it is good to put it out there that we're not trying to harass you, we just like talking about video games !
Also I feel bad posting off-topic, so I'll end by saying I'm really stoked about the next build (particularly the advanced lighting effects, that really sets DarkXL apart from similar projects like Doomsday) and what I've noticed is the longer we have to wait for a build, the sweeter that build is gonna be!

I understand what you're saying. I've seen the frustration and bitterness too, some places the devs are downright hostile. I never understood why though. Yes they're (and I'm) doing it in their spare time. But if you're too busy to look at requests, just say "I'm too busy, I'll consider new requests at some later date." If you think its a bad idea or don't have the inclination to implement just say so. But there's no point in getting angry or hostile, that just sucks the fun right out of the project. I'd rather have a thousand requests a day that I ignore then a community full of hostility or people walking on egg shells. And besides being open and encouraging requests and questions means that there is more conversation about your project. Not only is that healthy for the community but also the interest shown in the project is healthy for the hobbyist too - at least it helps my motivation. The only thing that would make me angry or bitter, I think, is if people started acting like jerks or being insulting. But no one is doing that here. But even then, it shouldn't make me (or whoever) angry towards everyone.
That said, these conversations really should happen in another thread.

Thanks for that, what I said earlier was never meant to be taken seriously (since you had said before you hadn't planned doing a port of JK). Somehow it turned into a big deal though.

What ever happened to that update anyway? Or was DaggerXL the update?

No, I got kind of carried away in the DaggerXL excitement. Anyway as I've said somewhere else I'll be ramping up DarkXL development again now that everything has stabilized. Real life and "non-hobby" work has finally been normal for a couple of weeks and DaggerXL has the first demo out and base code in place so I can manage my time better now. Anyway you can expect the DarkXL development to pick up again in the next few weeks. Also DarkXL will get some features that are showing up in DaggerXL such as CPU light mode, god mode, etc. And later heightmap rendering, level streaming for massive interconnected levels (imagine the entire game as one giant level), etc.
Believe it or not DaggerXL will actually help me focus on DarkXL more, because its something that's been on the back of my mind for quite some time. That's why I started it right after my other obligations lessened - oh a little over 3 weeks ago - i.e. when DaggerXL started - I started on that. Anyway now that the Daggerfall itch is being satisfied I can fully concentrate on DarkXL on those nights when I work on it. I won't take on anything else though until these two projects get to atleast beta (pretty close for DarkXL, much further off for DaggerXL).
In addition, since DaggerXL is a much more popular project, I can generate more interest in DarkXL by mentioning it and linking it from my DaggerXL blog.
The next build should have all the levels rendering correctly and should be a solid start toward the climb to beta. Once that's out I don't expect it to take very long to finally reach beta status.

I was just thinking someone needs to port the DF Specs to CHM for all those poor Vista users (doesn't ship with a .HLP reader by default, you have to download it from MS) [Edit: Actually if it's a 16-bit HLP apparently they still work in Vista...] not to mention update the ugly color scheme and fix the inconsistencies I found. Plus we can add DarkXL-specific info to it.
I started but got bored after a couple pages. >_> You can dump the old HLP file to an RTF using a tool called "Universal Extractor" so you can more easily cut and paste (especially those tooltip Doom notes). Then you can use Microsoft HTML Help Workshop to author a CHM. I've also used HelpNDoc which is easy to use but it lacks in customization options and adds an ad to the bottom of every page.

There has always been an HTML version of the DF Specs:
http://df-21.net/downloads/tutorials/dfspc302.zip
It could be updated but I don't know who has the authority.

Hey lucius, I just played DXL again and found a few bugs that hopefully haven't been mentioned already.
- Dianogas will attempt to attack you if you're on a ledge high above them. Here's a screenshot of where I was at the time (notice Kyle's center is not on the ledge but in the Dianoga's sector):
The same thing happens when you jump across those ledges - the dianogas detect the player in their sector and try to attack.
- Not sure about this one, but I think the Probe Droid's explosion also doesn't respect the player's height. One of them fell and exploded at the bottom of the ledge I was on (near the area in the above screenshot) and I was still damaged by the explosion.
- The "eye" things in the doors of Moff Rebus' room aren't there.
- This:
It's hard to see, but that floor that I'm looking at shouldn't be there. It doesn't have any walls around it either - just a floating platform. And it's invisible from the bottom.

Unfortunately I have something I need to do this week so the DarkXL and DaggerXL updates/releases will have to be delayed until next week. I need to spend the next several days finishing up an work related important task. However there will be an exciting update after that.
However I will still be around on the forums during breaks in work, so feel free to continue to post and ask questions and such.

Better yet, the German name of Friday is Freitag, "Free Day".
Speaking of which, I think lucius deserves quite a few of those free days Work puts the food on the table, I understand lol.
