I'm completely new at this, and after reading around on the site I'm unclear on a couple of things:

1. What tool can I use to simply unpack files like .WAX from a .GOB file? I saw one forum post that said to use Container Manager, which it said was available in the Utilities section in Downloads, but I couldn't find any such tool.

2. What tool is commonly used to transform BMPs into WAXs? Is BMPDF the best option available? (Read, is it really as complicated as the technique used in BMPDF?)

All of these tools are included in WDFUSE. There's two parts to WDFUSE, so make sure you download both and put them in the same directory.

The GOB manager in WDFUSE is really simple, it has a GUI. BMPDF, however, is a command line tool. Do you know how to use those?

There is a GUI converter in WDFUSE, but it doesn't work on my pc, so i couldn't help you there Sad I do know that if it does work for you, it should be really simple to use, just press buttons and it'll convert to pretty much any DF format. Good luck Razz

Okay, let me take this in order:

- I did finally figure out how to extract any file types from a GOB using WDFUSE, rather than just the level data.

- When you say there is another part to WDFUSE, do you mean the v2.50 beta? That's the only other download I see, other than the "Common Files" that just contains demos and help files.

- Are you saying that WDFUSE can be used in a point-and-click interface to transform BMPs into WAXs? If so, can you give me some more details about where in the program you do this? I will say that when I click on "Toolkit" and then click on the "WAX Lab" tab, I get an alert that says "Not Implemented Yet!"

Yes, I can use command line programs. It's writing the makefile.txt for BMPDF that looks difficult, though.

Download the BMP2DF tools, they can convert various DF file formats to and from PCX/BMP.

. . . Yes, I know that BMPDF (I assume that's what you mean; I don't see a utility called BMP2DF) can do it, as I mentioned before. But if I understood sheepandshepherd correctly, I thought he was saying that there is a tool in WDFUSE that can do it with an easier interface. Can anyone clarify?

It's halfway down the list. You need to look for it by its shortened name, ConMan.

AFAIK the command line tools in BMPDF (which is what I meant) are the only ones that can handle WAX conversions.

You are welcome to write your own using the file format documentation in df_specs.hlp. Razz

http://www.dosbox.com/download.php_main=1

Download the MAC OSX version of DOSBox and try running the tools I mentioned using it (IIRC they are DOS based so they should work in DOSBox) to convert the WAXs and FMEs to and from BMP or PCX format. Hopefully you can find a program for Macs that can edit those file types.

I should warn you though that DOSBox can be difficult to set up and use especially if you do not have experience with using DOS.
