I've posted here in the past under the name "Blue Ghost", "Blue Ghost X", "Ronin Jedi" and a couple other handles.
I don't play DF much. Occasionally I come across the CD, and I'll reinstall the game for nostalgia sake. Kind of like reinstalling DOOM with a Star Wars theme.
I remembered those old days when I was part of the DF community on the old AOL BBS, playing the first user made levels, then salivating with everyone else about Jedi Knight DF II.
And a Thought occured to me; whatever happened to Mattias Weilander?
I did a brief search, and came across this archived thread on the Massassi temple BBS.
Quote:
Darko06-08-2004, 04:07 PM
Gather 'round, children, and I shall tell the story of Dark3D.
This story takes place in the magical land of Mattias Welander's head, which, despite it's enormous size, is located in the vast regions of Mattias Welander's *** .
Mattias started making Dark3D, and it was good. Unfortunately, at that point people took an interest in it, and began asking him questions. This angered Mattias, because often they would do things such as misspell his name, say "Dark 3d" instead of "Dark3D" or put forth opinions that did not agree with his own, whether related to the project or not. Thus, Mattias took his Dark3D and went home.
Later, a monsterously insane human being who, despite being in his late 50s, still considered Dark Forces to be the pinnacle achievement of the human race, convinced Mattias that he should restart the Dark3D project. This was done primarily though textual fellatio.
But then an evil monster from the land of Canada, who is known in these parts as Jon`C, comitted the unforgivable act of suggesting a way that Dark3D could be improved. Mattias, being of the heavenly country of Finland, which is obviously flawless and eternally blessed from on high, declared that everyone on the north american continent was evil, and thus he would continue to work on Dark3D, but he would make it unusable on computers in North America. His reasoning, which is never to be questioned, was that most of the world's people don't live on the north american continent, so it won't really affect many people. And the good people of Somalia rejoiced at the thought of being able to play an outdated computer game 3d accelerated, but were sadly killed minutes later by the government of the day.
Displeased by the fact that his obviously righteous action had displeased many of his former supporters, Mattias dropped the project. The insane old man continues to attempt to get him to continue working on the piece of software that shall surely attain us salvation, but as of now, the great and noble being of Mattias exists only to periodically come out of his cave to mention on df-21.net that he has a university degree and therefore is much smarter than everyone up to and including God, and that all Americans are evil baby eating corpse-sodomizers who are destined for hell.
And thus ends the story of Dark3D. A cautionary tale, to be sure.
....and I bet you'd like to think some of it was made up. Unfortunately, no.
Yes, I remember it like yesterday. Not to toot my own horn too much, but it was actually I who PO'd the mighty Mattias when I told him to shove his project up his Finnish "thermal exhaust port" (right below the main port).
Anyway, in all serioussnous, I think Mr. Weilander suffers from mental illness. But I was curious whatever happened to the ... "man".

Wow! I had put together bits and pieces of the story by reading old posts, but that was just hilarous! I have no idea what ever happened to him, but I'm thankful that a Dark Forces remake complete with built-in editor is now in good hands.
With the development of DarkXL well under way, all is well with the Dark Forces community.

Yeah, I remember exchanging thought with him on the old DarkJedi BBS. The guy used to blow his stack there, and complain about all Americans were idiots. Then he made a threat to shut down computers or sue everyone who still had a copy of Force Builder on their computer (an editor for JK that he never finished). I still have my copy
Then, I think it was 2000, or near there, that I'd finally had enough of him, and told him (on this very BBS) to keep his project and shove it.
Mattias then got very haughty and smug, and started taking down names of all the people for whom his accelerated engine would not work. In other words, he was going to either code via a batch file or in the engine code itself, the IPs of people he didn't like, for which the game would not run.
He even finally made up his mind that Dark 3D would not run on any computers in North America. Then changed his mind to "just the United States".
Lord forbid you misspell his name. Calling him "mattias welander" or "MaTtIaS WeIlAnDeR" or Matias, or some derivation by accident, was a cardinal sin.
However, the reason I'm posting this (other than to get a good laugh) is because I truly believe the man was (maybe still is) mentally ill.
That, and I was also curious if he was still working on his project (going on over ten years now ).
Personally, I always wanted to take a trip to Sweden, knock on his door, and punch him in the nose
Ah, dreams. Anyway, I also wanted to see what other people's reactions were.

Since you just created this account, I don't know if you've been lurking at the site or if you came back from a long hiatus. So out of curiosity, have you seen the DarkXL project lucius is working on? With the effort he's putting into it, I don't think anyone is likely to care whether or not Mattias Weilander ever gets a personal version of CDark or Dark3D running that he can dangle over everyone's heads.

I've gone after a very-long hiatus. Several years.
I don't think I've seen the new project. I did play a Jedi Outcast version of Dark Forces a couple months back. The guys who worked on that really did a good job. I don't know if it's the same thing you're talking about.

I'd like to say that I brilliantly sparred with Mattias over the years. However, I was 13 around those days. Looking back through the archives made me realise what an idiot I was...
I still think he was a bit of the jerk though.

Yeah, that guy was a piece of work. I remember either Jon or Gonk really capping on Mattias when he blew his temper (again) about Dark 3D and "dumb Americans". Jon said something like "I deny that Mattias has any coding ability, now or ever..."
Ah well. Memories.
The new DarkXL looks great.

He was one of the biggest trolls around here. I never really understood what his problem was and I don't think I want to know. I didn't care that he hated americans (myself included), but I did care that he berated us much of the time. Kind of that self-righteous attitude that many here have already mentioned. I pissed him off once, tried to make peace, didn't work and he continued to be stubborn and a hater, I was smart and gave up trying.
I dunno. I'm beginning to see just how many thick-headed people there are in the world.
Been at least 3 or 4 years since we've seen him, and ever since it's been quiet. A peaceful quiet. A good quiet.

That's the thing I never really understood. Star Wars is appreciated by people all over the world. But it's a distinctly American creation, as is DOOM, PCs and Dark Forces. Again, it's not such a big deal. People all over the world love Dark Forces. But Mattias just went off on us. The few emails I exchanged with him were... interesting.
Oh well.
DFXL looks fantastic. Will it be able to load previously made custom levels?

It has limited support for MODs at the moment, but Lucius is doing a fantastic job working on this project and is constantly keeping us all updated.

As Burning Gundam said, DarkXL already can load custom levels. There are some issues that have to be sorted out though that keep many of those levels from working properly - but these issues will be sorted out by the beta. And you'll also be able to load existing levels in the editor too - since it uses the same file format. New features will be embedded in comments so that even levels with new features can be loaded in Dark Forces.

Very cool. I was looking forward to playing DF96 and the Lahara hotel fully accelerated years back. Now it looks like that's going to be a reality. I can't wait.

Now *this* brings back some interesting memories. Not necessarily pleasant memories, but all of them interesting.
For whatever reason, I've always remembered the last thing I ever wrote to Mr. Welander here at DF-21. It was something to the effect of: "If only I were Swedish!"
I smile every time I think of that, even though I can't for the life of me remember the context. It was probably something idiotic, as I was a stressed-out wreck around that time.
Had to laugh at the reference to the "insane old man", too. I'd completely forgotten about him...
Anyway, it's good to see this place still exists and there are still some familiar names floating about. I've been meaning to come back and check for a couple years now, but (shockingly) never seemed to get around to it. If that doesn't remind you who I am, nothing will.

Well, you picked a good time to come back. With DarkXL under development, there's now a reason to show up more than twice a year.

Maybe this will jog your memory? Here's your post in its entirety:

I'm not exactly sure myself. Just winging it as usual... (That certainly inspires confidence, eh?)
No surprises so far. Even the muffin thing isn't a shock (though I kinda' wish it were)... It's really tempting to have some fun tweaking people, but I guess I'd have to delete my own posts. Stupid censorship! If only I were Swedish!
Oops, that might be inflammatory. I should have thought this through a bit more...
If you want to take a stroll down amnesia lane, your post can be found in this thread, which incidentally also contains Mattias' final post at this site.

Space Goat, oh my. A reunion of sorts. You probably don't remember me (not very well I'm guessing). My old handle, Blue Ghost, bespoke of a former 20-something DF level enthusiast who used to post here years back. I always wanted to make a DF level after playing Jason Burton's offerings, but my old Nex Gen P80 couldn't handle the editor, so I never got into making levels.
But I loved coming here to see what the latest levels were, especially after most of the DF sites evaporated. There were so many really inentive maps from many creative minds that used to come here. I'm really looking forward to playing those levels again with this new project.
Mattias on the other hand...
Anyways, good to see you posting.

Oh yeah, I can remember a Blue Ghost. It's only been 4 or 5 years since I heroically abandoned DF-21, but it seems like a lifetime ago for some reason.

I mean, I'll DO it, but if you want to take it back to work on it, that's cool too. You probably had a better idea what you wanted to do with it anyway.
I did write up a mission briefing for it though if you'd be so inclined to look.

I was looking at the memberlist, and discovered to my amusement that Mattias Welander is the #7 poster on this board.
Even though his last post was in 2004...

...and I discovered to my amusement that out of the top 10 posters, lucius is the only one who didn't register in 2003. The other nine all signed up in the last seven days of September, 2003.
Unfortunately, Mattias' posting rank says more about the inactivity at DF-21 than it does about his tendency to troll.
