I know this forum is meant for support and help for just DF, but I have a quick question regarding JK.
So I got DF2 working on my netbook and being an old game it runs flawless to a certain degree.
Since the netbook doesn't have a optical drive, I have to run the game using the cd file trick to run it without a cd.
Now the game itself runs really smooth and the framerate is perfect. However, everytime a new sound is loaded the game pauses briefly (hiccups). I'm not sure why this happens because the specs of my computer are more than enough to run it. So I guess my question is why does this happen and is there any way to fix this?

Make sure your OS is up to date (what OS are you running?)
Try defragmenting your drive.
Close any programs you aren't using as they may be hogging the hard drive or CPU or memory.
Also make sure your Jedi Knight\Resource directory looks like this:
07/12/2007 12:39 PM <DIR> video
02/03/2009 11:49 AM 4 JK_.CD
09/11/1997 07:45 AM 58,703,359 Res1hi.gob
09/11/1997 07:51 AM 56,069,075 res2.gob
Video directory is optional, if it's not present videos simply won't appear in-game. In addition you can have a Res1lo.gob instead of hi but nowadays there's no reason why you would.
If the problem persists try disabling sound in-game if there is a checkbox for it and seeing if that helps. If there is no option or the hiccup still happens disable your sound driver and reboot and then try.
You can also try hooking Process Monitor up to JK to see if anything dumb is happening when the hiccup occurs, but you really need to know a little bit about how Windows works to make sense of the output.

I think I discovered the problem. I pretty much just copied over all the files from my other computer when I originally installed the game, because I thought that would be easier.
So I shared my DVD drive and reinstalled it on the netbook and now it appears to work just fine now.
Thanks for the help

So I still have the same issue, but I'm realizing that this problem doesn't just pertain to JK, but ALL of my games (with the exception of Doom Legacy which oddly enough has no problems).
I plugged in Process Monitor and looked at stuff, but it seems a bit more overwhelming than I was prepared for. What are some things I should look for?

Well if it's all games Process Monitor might not help as much.
Doom Legacy may not be affected because it doesn't have as much of a demand on the CPU.
Try opening Task Manager and sorting by CPU usage (and/or some I/O usage column if you're using Vista) and see if any particular process spikes during these pauses.

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure. I just thought it was strange because it does it even with Command and Conquer and that is significantly older. It's not like I'm running anything really hardcore, I think the highest demanding game I have installed is Counter Strike 1.6 . But looking at it, I was surprised to learn that the Intel Atom is actually a dual core chip, I thought it was just a single core
I noticed that on one cpu it was running at close to 100% while the other was running about half. I dunno, I'm stumped.
Guess it's something I have to live with. It's not like I got this to do gaming with, but it certainly would have been nice to run the classics.

Some old games don't play well with multi-core processors. I forget the name of the utility to use, but running on a single core makes those games feel more at home.

Yeah, I guess just in general this computer isn't very fast and the performance just isn't there. I do however love the portability, weight, and battery life.
I am thinking about buying another laptop (which defeats the purpose of buying the small one originally). But because the other is a bit more convenient for trips and such, I might still keep it around.
Kind of a silly reason to buy a new laptop though.

There's a reason they're called netbooks, then...
So tempted to buy one, even though I would actually need a full-blown laptop for half the stuff I want to do with a portable computer (e.g. write code, watch HD video). But they're so nice and small and shiny...!

Well by stroke of bad luck, my new laptop won't run it period because my version of vista is 64bit.
Oh well, perhaps it was never meant to be. I would have liked to have finished Mysteries of the Sith though.

Jedi Knight will run on 64 bit with a small workaround. A quick search would have yielded the solution.
