This is the new official Build version 8.05 thread. The other thread covered too many versions and was too large to be useful. The build and instructions can be found here.

A reminder: if you have issues, please submit them to the issue tracker. Do a search first though to make sure that your issue hasn't already been reported.

Help! I can't seem to play custom gobs. I'm using the command line, but it still doesn't work. I'm running it using the 'run' command in the windows start menu. Is that correct?

That may affect where DarkXL looks for the GOB file.

Yeah some don't load - think it's to do with DarkXL not being able to load any levels unless they replace secbase or something.

It should be "darkxl.exe -uGobName.gob", assuming the GOB is in the Dark Forces directory. If not, then you'll need to put the relative path. For example, if you GOB's are under C:\Dark\Levels (assuming the Dark Forces directory is C:\Dark), then you should use
"darkxl.exe -uLevels\GobName.gob".

Also note that in the version that is currently out, many of the levels don't render correctly yet - that should be fixed in the next build. Also if some INF doesn't work, use the 'F' (float) and 'G' (pass through adjoin) keys.

That's the problem I had, I couldn't test my level in DXL because it replaced one of the later levels. It might not be the same problem though, what happens when you try to load it? Does it just play regular secbase?

It's a bit counterintuitive that the parameter name (-u) and the parameter value (GobName.gob) are glued together this way. Something like "-u gobname.gob" would be more consistent with the rest of the software world.

Perhaps but the command line works the same as Dark Forces.

Barry Brien, did you get the command line to work for you?

Just to be sure you cannot play any of the original levels past level 4 in this build right?

That is correct, the next build will have all the levels available.

I just loaded Dark Tide IV in DarkXL. It seems DarkXL doesn't support compressed textures. Will it ever?

Apparently, according to his blog post recently, the issue has been fixed so yes it will.

Burning Gundam is correct, you can see some screenshots of Dark Tide IV on the website. Still early in the level, though, because there is an INF issue I have to fix for the level to fully work. That will fixed in a future build.

That's cool. I loaded level 2 to see how all the neon adverts looked in beautiful glowing DarkXL, but they showed as really messed up.

Maybe it does't load custom .PALs and .CMPs yet?

BG - It doesn't seem to, but also 99% of the 800+ custom BMs in dtide4 were compressed, if they hadn't been the gob would have been a few hundred megabytes in size.

Ok another question - Seeing as Level 4 is uncompleteable how do I play later levels. I want to play a mission that replaces Jabship, but I can't because my mission list only goes as far as Research Facility

I'll check out level 2 later and see if it works in the development build. I'm pretty sure the problem is just the compressed texture issue. If it works, I'll make a new Screenshot of the Day out of it so you can see what it looks like (and if it doesn't then I'll fix whatever the problem is). As for playing levels beyond level 4, that is currently not possible. However all levels will be open in the next build (for the base game and for mods).

Oh, and DarkXL does use the PAL file associated with each level - if it didn't some of the base levels would look funky. Razz

I plan on releasing the next build next week sometime. Smile

Will all the inf be in place for the next build?

No, the next build will not contain all the work I've been doing - just a subset where all the issues with that set can be fixed up and made ready for release. It's scaled back somewhat in order to get the releases happening regularly again. All the INF issues will be fixed in a future build shortly following the next one.

Will the missing INF make any of the base levels unfinishable? If it does, you might wanna have all levels in the list appear on starting the game. That way we won't have to find some funky way of cheating our way through the uncompletable levels to get to later ones.
Next week? Mmm, I like progress Very Happy

That's the plan. When all the levels are properly completable, then I'll go back to the current (proper) system for level progression.

Hey Barry Brien, I took screenshots of one of the other Dark Tide IV levels and put it up as a Screenshot of the Day on the blog
