How many of you have heard Katarn's yell in games, movies, shows..
That yell used to scare me when I played Dark Forces as a little kid. You'd fall off of a high ledge and that sound would play. I guess it scared me as a kid because it sounds almost half-human, like a roar at the beginning followed by a scream. I do not know exactly why it always used to scare me though. Now, I am searching for the origins of the sound. It is used in many many different things. Most notably:
-Dark Forces
-Starcraft(Terran Academy)
-Nutrigrain commercial
-Ahh! Real monsters show
-A Toothpaste commercial
-A ripley's believe it or not episode
-The movie Broken arrow

Wow im not the only one who got scared of that as a kid. But I think the scream started with a "G" as in "Geeerrrrraaaaaaalllll" or something like that. By the way, don't 4 get Beethoven's 2nd when that F-tard fell from his boat home.

Can also be heard in the movie Serial Mom (John Waters, 1994).
Kathleen Turner kills a youth in the toilets then a guy finds the body later and yells à la Katarn.

Brilliant! Yeah I remember the first time I heard it in an ad I was amazed. It was before I knew about stock sfx. The Kell Dragon also plays the field a bit, and I think that I heard that punch sound in a Crunchy Nut Cornflakes advert at some time.

Should we declare this known to be "the Katarn yell?"

Actually, I think this yell might be one and the same with the Wilhlm Scream.
From Wikipedia:
The Wilhelm's revival came from Star Wars series sound designer Ben Burtt, who tracked down the original recording (which he found as a studio reel labelled "Man being eaten by alligator").
(Yeah, that sounds about right!)

I heard one or two DF sound effects on a documentary on robots... they did a dumb looking future possible look at an entirely robot-controlled space ship... the ship was announcing things to the robots via a PA system... wtf happens to wireless ethernet in the future?!?! D:

A man being eaten by an alligator... Now THAT makes sense of why a guy would yell like that. If we could get the name of that guy who got eaten by that alligator, we would put him in our DF history books as well as our movies!!! LOL!!!
I just couldnt stop wondering of the situation a dude would be in to make such a yell. But that one makes perfect sense.

I know this is an old thread, but I think I just heard the scream in the movie The Doors. Its about 1 hour and fifty minutes in Val Kilmer is going nuts and the cops start to throw people off the stage and there is a shot of two speaker stacks falling and the scream starts then gets muffled. Anyone want to give it a listen and see if its the same scream?

The Wilhlm scream is different. It's bit higher pitched and it wobbles a bit. I might be wrong about this but it occurs in episode IV when Luke shoots one of the stormtroopers just before he swings across the chasm with Leia, and in epsiode VI when Luke knocks one of the Weequay's into the Sarlacc.
It's in the opeining battle of episode III as well. Some poor clone gets it.

Your right Barry, the Wilhelm happens when he shoots the storm trooper.
The worst use was in the Fantastic Four. They used it twice within five minutes...

I would love if sound editors could use the Howard Dean scream. It's right up there with the Wilhelm. Seriously, it sounds great, it's not a political comment.

I remember hearding it in The Medallion (Jackie Chan movie). I'm not sure where exactly; it might have been near the end with the main villain getting knocked helluva far.

Update: Also heard it in a Ninja Gaiden II commercial last night. Not sure where to find it online, though.

Was playing Call of Duty 4 the other day online and never noticed before, but every time you level up you can hear it.
And I vaguely remember hearing it in the anime School Rumble. I know it was in some sort of anime...

The Katarn Scream™ could have been heard as well some years ago in a yoghurt commercial on the Austrian national radio, Ö3.
In the same commercial one could also hear the alarm sound from DF, that occurs when Kyle starts the sewer drainage system in the Anoat City.

LucasFilm sound designer Ben Burtt (mentioned earlier in this thread) has worked for Pixar for a good number of years... In fact, the Graphics Group—the company that came to be known as Pixar—was once a division of LucasFilm. This is probably why you'll hear the Wilhelm scream in movies such as Toy Story, Cars, and the new Up film.
Footnote: the novel robotics SFX in Star Wars and the ones found in WALL-E were done by the same person.
