Hello all,
i try to get the latest official patch (or all available) for dark forces that were released.
i didn't find anything on the internet so far even on lucasarts is nothing about dark forces.
All i found was a patch on a 1995/08 PC-Magazin i stored to my dark forces game.
but i think it's not the latest version.
Also it might be good idee if some Admin will put the file to the download section of this website,
because i don't know how long the website will be up i stored the patch to.
A download of the file can be made here
GERMAN PATCH ONLY !!! DO NOT INSTALL ON ENGLISH VERSIONS
http://freenet-homepage.de/tmotrackmania/dforces/darkforces_patch.rar
Content of the patch
- CHKLIST.TAV
- _DFUP.EXE
- DFUPDATE.EXE
INSTALLATION
The only way i could install the patch was to use DOS-BOX
Here is the German description of the patch 1995/08 as screenshot
http://php-de.tmm.cvsn.de/tripod/de/tmotrackmania/typo3temp/pics/6c65e54b8a.jpg
If you know something reply me soon.

Man, I feel like I was a bit rude. Sorry about that.
The only patch I'm aware of is the patch Lucas Arts released for Macs a long time ago to fix various bugs. Lucas Arts still has that patch on their website, but nothing for the DOS version. Even doing a google search yeilded nothing.
What is the patch supposed to do?

no problem i inserted the codes and than it worked.
i read also the welcome text but not far enough:)
and i thought your response was just a standard message which will be generated if the Message Body is empty. Pretty fast reply
mhh on the cd- label is printed: Dark Forces Update
and as the description (picture link above)
it is just said that it will remove some bugs out the reference 3d game of lucas arts but nothing specific
so i thought i could get here some more infos and maybe more patches (the latest once or all)
this patch is for PC

Interesting. Considering that LA only released a single patch for DF for mac, perhaps it was the same update, but for the PC version. I'd assume you'd have the most current one if this is the case.

If there is just one released ever for dark forces this might be an option.
i will look next period of time into the thread
maybe other people have some real old cd-roms with old bugfixes. but not older than 1995/08

I am quite sure there are no patches for the DOS version. The CD have have says it's build 2, but there's no telling what that number means (Build 1 might have been an internal build only and was never RTM).
LucasArts has all their public files stored at ftp://ftp.lucasarts.com/ , and they do go back to the DOS era games. They have the mac Dark Forces patch but there is no PC Dark Forces patch. Thus I doubt there ever was any.
_DFUP.EXE is a self-extracting archive that 7zip can extract. It appears to have the following replacement files:
SETUP.EXE
JEDI.LVL
TEXT.MSG
M05JAN01.VOC
M05KYL02.VOC
README.TXT
All the files are in German (I didn't check the EXE but it probably is too). The readme doesn't appear to contain any version information.
The only things affected by these files are the setup utility, and the display of some text strings in-game, and two voice over clips. No engine patches.
My guess is that it probably a patch for the German version of Dark Forces only to correct localization issues in the text and speech.
If you apply this patch to a non-German language DF you will end up with German text and voice overs in-game and in the setup utility. So don't!

Oops I missed three files:
DFBRIEF.LFD
MENU.LFD
PIT.LFD
First two are probably just for localization. Not sure what's in the last one but I bet it too has localization fixes.

maybe its not for download while they have forgotten about the patch or while it would cause some problem to point out its just for german version.
but who knows

hi i found this on the internet accidentally
here is the page
https://www.mbnet.fi/Apaja/alueet/tiedostot.asp?ParentID=&faid=316&Sort=Name&Order=ASC&Kohta=161
The description date : 26.2.1997
Dark Forces: Speech upgrade
Upgrades your version of Dark Forces to make the yellow text scroller at the start talk. The genuine Dark Forces narrator (Denny Delk) will read out the yellow text scroller ("Text Crawl").
filename
DFTALK.ZIP [49kib]
I get the download it was finnland(language) but with some web translator it worked to get through the registration.
once again store this to your site. its for all i think this time
here is the upload for download
http://freenet-homepage.de/tmotrackmania/dforces/dftalk.zip
CONTENT OF THE DF-TALK.TXT FILE
Speech upgrade for Dark Forces
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Upgrades your version of Dark Forces to make the yellow text scroller
at the start talk. The genuine Dark Forces narrator (Denny Delk) will
read out the yellow text scroller ("Text Crawl").
Unzip DF-TALK.ZIP in your DARK\LFD directory and that's it.
Whenever you run Dark Forces it will speak.
The text does not quite match the speech in one spot, because Lucas Arts
changed their mind about what it said, but it is close enough.
This file does not actually contain the speech, and is almost exactly the
same as the original file on the CD. I just modified the .FILM file to use
some never before heard Sound FX that I found on the CD.
Created By Carl Kenner, the Cutscene Creator.
The first zip there is an unofficial patch which just tweaks the intro to read the text aloud. It was likely originally something intended by the devs but they cut it, maybe because the scroll text is never read aloud in the movies.
The second zip has files not for DF, I think. It's likely configuration files to map Thrustmaster buttons and axis to keyboard keys (or joystick axis/keys) so the controller will work in Dark Forces. It could have been released by LucasArts, by a fan, or by whoever made the Thrustmaster (I'm guessing the last).
I wouldn't call either of these patches, myself. The first is a user mod and the second doesn't even modify Dark Forces, they're for the Thrustmaster drivers.
but who knows
The german localization may have been the responsibility of another company (IE of people who knew german. ) and so they would be responsible for the patch, not LucasArts.
An example, though not a perfect one... Nintendo of America is responsible for localizing into English many games released by Nintendo of Japan in Japan. As such Nintendo of Japan is not responsible for those localized changes.
Not a perfect example since they're pieces of the same company, and since those companies rarely patch their games after release, but still you can see what I mean.
Morning,
yes this is for sure, that the german company who was in responsibilty for the localization is closed for business today.
But hey now its possible to brag your friends like:
LOOK AT MY DARK FORCES IT TALKS TO ME NOW
I think this is mostly anything which could be called "patches", that are available on the internet for download.
If you found something that might be interesting and
is releated to Dark Forces and has something todo with "patching dark forces" you may post a reply here
So what exactly is the difference between build 1 and build 2 then?
I've never seen a build 2 version. All CDs and Steam versions I've tried say build 1, including those with the Windows launcher.
I have both CD and Steam versions. They are both build 2 and the CD version includes the Windows 95 autorun.
I've heard from some people with build 1 CDs and they say the Windows 95 autorun is not present on the CD. Maybe it's also missing some demos, I forget what they said exactly now.
You can check the version in CD.ID on the CD or in the Dark Forces game folder (for Steam).
Hmm so it does! I never noticed that.
I guess they didn't recompile for the second release. That number must be wrong then...
