Hi everyone! I get no sound.. I have an old computer, a Compaq Presario 4764 P200. After a crash, when my technician Henry re-installed W98 on a new C drive from scratch, he no longer had the DOS environment driver. The native driver is for W95 and doesn't work. He told me what to ask for exactly:

Needing a DOS EXE driver and setting environment variables configuration for ESS 1869/1887/1888
Audio that can be safely installed and configured in Windows 98 Second Edition.

If anyone has one PLEASE contact me.. I would most appreciate it!

I would actually recommend just using DOSBox on a modern machine since it's so easy to set up where DOS is very hard... actually the dosbox site doesn't say that it WON'T work on 98 so give it a shot.

This forum thread seems to go through what you are going through: http://www.computing.net/answers/drivers/ess-allegro-1988-sound-driver-4-dos/5347.html

Laughing You see, when I first had W95, Dark Forces worked wondefully! But I needed W98.. at first it worked because Henry had the special driver. But then he moved, and I think discarded it during a clean up. My C drive crashed, and he had to put in a new drive, and re-install W98, but he didn't have the driver anymore.

Right now, I'm not interested in getting a new computer.. I feel my connection is VERY secure with dial-up and W98. I have a terrible fear of any kind of identity theft. I would not consider a W7 machine.

ESS used to make sound cards. search for a ess sound card driver, load it in memory with either devicehigh= in the config.sys or lh= in the autoexec.bat file.
if its a .exe load it in the autoexec.bat. you could try also to use set blaster= then add the irq and dma ect. from the ones listed in the device manger under resorses of your card. look up set blaster=.
you can lh and set variables after the computer boots manually in the command prompt. btw

do this first.
run setup from the install folder and set the sound card settings. try ess, if not try sb16. most cards should be compatable with sound blaster settings.

So Sheldon, did it work? Also, how are you? Are you still playing DF? Did you like DTIV? Smile It was you who convinced me to get back into DF editing. I'd like to think you're still as passionate about it as you once were.
