JC, Matt H and I run a site that is pretty much the best source for Mac DF:
http://www.thedarktide.com
Look around there and most of your questions will be answered.

By some coincidence they also make the best levels for DF ever.

The source codes for Lucasart's games are in the same condition of those for the Unreal series... Only you can't purchase a license to use LEC's 3D engines... As far as "free" engine codes (that is what I presume you mean by "the source code", being a wide category), there's Id's engines (W3D, Doom, Q1 & Q2), and the "Build" engine, by Ken Silverman. I really wish people could get their hands on a copy of the Unreal source...
If you wanted specifications and not 3D code, then you should check out the "Unnoficial DF Specs", which is on the "Downloads" page as part of the WDFUSE common files, or something like that...

In OS 9, I can take MacDF screenshots using MacsBug or the shareware version of Snapz Pro or Snapz Pro 2.
Other open-source DF-like games: Well, there's Marathon 2.
(I just hit the top 20 post counts list. I'd better slow the pants down and stick to General Discussion.)

I use OS 9 and Snapz Pro has never worked for me in DF. I think we went over this once before though Oosha, and I left feeling utterly confused.

Actually, now that I think about it, I never used Snapz Pro 2 or MacsBug with 9, only with 8.6.
I'm confused too. I thought you said Snapz Pro worked but Snapz Pro 2 (which has the movie capture option) didn't.

Download Snapz (Just snapz, not Pro or anything else). This can be found at thedarktide.com
Then get an image hosting site. Mine is from villagephotos.com.
The only thing is that the images have to under 129k to be able to be uploaded. I use photoshop to convert them to JPEGS and reduce the size so they can be uploaded succesfully.

I tried downloading Snapz from The Dark Tide's Web site but when I click on it, it just gives me a text file of useless nonsense.

Right. Just use Snapz 1.0-
To download, try doing as "save link to disk" or such. I don't know why it is downloading as text information, but downloading it this way will give you the .sea file, which can be unstuffed with Stuffit Expander or Stuffit Deluxe.
