Just wondering if anybody knew the story with the Level Review forum.
I don't to sound pushy and ungrateful, but I did spend a lot of time getting that forum sorted, and I'd hate to have to to it all again.

Oddly enough, I didn't even realize that it was gone. Sorry about that... I'd hate to see all of that previous work gone... You'd have to play HUNDREDS of levels again... It's like mines... "That's hours of your life you're never going to get back..."

Yes, I agree, the level review forum should be returned. That´s a forum that the non-regular visitors are probably having much interest about (searching for clues, walkthroughs, etc.).

So, if the levvels forum were to return, what do you think should happen with all the old material (which I and others have a backup of, or at least the majority of)? The way I see it, none of the options are too pretty.

We could just start all over - create a new thread for each level - possibly using the same initial comments that were used last time, but the user comments would differ from that point on.

We could create an archive of the old threads which would have the old info, but no one could add new posts to them. (This would probably then be off the main site, not from the BB. It's probably the quickest, easiest option.)

We could do both, seperately.

We could, with each new thread for each level, start it with a big long post that was copied and pasted from the old board into the new one. (This could be massive and messy, but would put all the comments into one place.)

We could do the same as I just mentioned, except have them edited - determine which comments/posts were relevant and which could be skipped (i.e. off topic.)

In any case, there would probably be a fair amount of leg-work involved.

In my opinion, it would be good if there would be an active levvel review forum, but it doesn´t need to feature all the other posts (except preferably Barry´s review on the beginning). And the archives of the old forum could be stored somewhere for reference.
(Yeah, I know I´m picky and possibly a big optimist. Wink )

By the way, what is he difference between a level and a levvel? I hear that used a lot around here.

I agree with the third of Matt's idea: There should be an archive of the old levvel reviews (as with a copy of ALL of the old forum topis). Then, we should start the review forum fresh, so that we can get a new perspective on some of these levels/levvels, some of which have aged quite a bit since their last comment.

As far as I've been able to tell, it's quite simple: you play a level, while you talk about a levvel...

Well, as far as I know, levvel is a parody about the famous text file of Mines.

I'd gladly do all the work again, only I don't have regular access to a pc. If people are willing to wait for me to do this work on my infrequent visits home, then that's fine, or if somebody else wants to undertake the task, that's fine too, just so long as I can still be a review guy.

Fish's quote is inaccurate. This can be blamed on the fact that df-21.org is down.

The "Editing/Levels" forum was once renamed "Editing/Levvels"

Hey, what about the Katarns reviews? Did they make it out alive? Y'know, we could all win here... if I got a few people interested in doing reviews, it would not only get reviews for the Levels but re-activate my failing unit. Come on guys, think about it!

That I'd like to see. I got the one with Levvel Reviews, but not that.

Hey, Alex, my advise if you were going to try that, would be to assign specific people specific levels to review. When I was involved it would take two months for a bunch of people to write reviews on the same level, and then one gets picked and the others all died.

Just a thought, but your in command.

I too would be willing to put in some of the leg work of recreating the threads (esp. since I have the backup of the old one.) But the powers that be would need to re-create the forum, first (since it is currently beyond my power and abilities.)

And once that's done, the links on the level download pages can be fixed as well.

Forget Mt. Kurek, this is the Ultimate Dark Forces Mission. Amazing atmosphere, real sense of drama, great visuals, just a perfect level.

AlexG, I do agree with you that Mt. Kurek is still number one. Condition Red to me just doesn't have the grandeur of Mt. Kurek.

Great level, but you shouldn't go around comparing it with Mount Kurek. Kurek went for the big and epic, but while Condition Red is also big and epic, it's far more small scale in setting. Far more Star Warsish. Both levels are great, but they're too different to be able compare the two.

Answer: Condition Red. Never a dull moment.

You were right Geoffrey, thanks for pointing that out.

I don't think eithe Condition Red or Mt. Kurek win Best DF Level ever--I don't think there really is one. Both of them are wonderful levels in their own way, and they both hold tons of amazing INF work and special effects, which were well done in both levels. It's not a definite tie in the contest of which is better, but neither really wins... you know what I mean.

I think Condition Red is all about effects -- and there's nothing wrong with that. It's one heck of a ride, even if it's primarily a showcase.

Mt. Kurek, however, is a "true" level that's very challenging, long, and epic. I think it wins overall, in terms of gameplay & stuff.

Geoffrey Simpson wrote:
Oh, no, Condition Red definitely wins on gameplay. There's always something happening, always some enemy around, always a new cool VUE to discover.

Hmmmm.... it sort of works. However, it could be a lot of work -- probably TOO much work -- if I don't figure out a way to automate all the replacements (HTML to BBCode, you know.)

I call Discovery at Ironfort and Beyond Glory 1 and 2!

That is, if we are even going to do reviews anymore.

What, you have no stomach for boring and repetitive computer work? There's only what... some 300 threads to replace? That'd only be a few hours of work, mabye a day at most... Very Happy

Aww, why would we want to make the job easier? It's much more fun to watch (too bad we can't!) somebody else scream inarticulately whenever they're having difficulties... As long as we're out of throwing range...

Well, my point was whether or not it was worth it to do all that - if posting the whole thread as a series of quotes was considered valuable, even though it doesn't list dates, the contexts have changed, people's names may have changed, links may be out of date....

It might be better to archive it and link to it in the new threads. (not that the archives are currently working, either... anyone know what's the latest with df-21.org ?) But there's something kind of cool of having it in the thread, too.
