I think these levels look great, but every time I download them, it says Windows Can't open this type of file, it needs to know what program was used to create it etc.
Do I need to have something downloaded to open these?
(Yes I am a moron when it comes to all this home made levels and stuff)

Instructions for playing a good (or not-so-good) custom-made DF level (or levvel, as the case may be):
1. Make sure you have DF installed correctly. Most people know when they have a problem here, as they can't even play the original levels.
2. If you use a PC, get WinZip (from www.winzip.com), or a similar utility. You will need this utility to open many files found on the Internet, such as almost everything on this site.
3. Find and download a level/levvel that you find interesting. If, for some reason, it doesn't download, go to report it here.
4. Use WinZip (or whatever you got) to extract the various files from the .zip files you just downloaded. Once WinZip is installed, you merely have to open the file itself, unless you disabled "affiliate .zip files with WinZip" when installing. Put the files into you C:/DARK folder, or wherever you put Dark Forces.
5. If the download included a .BAT file, run it, and things should start up right away! If not, remember the name of the .GOB file, then go into the DOS prompt. Get to your DF folder, then type:
DARK -u********.GOB
Insert the name of the .GOB file where the stars are.
6. Enjoy! On a side note, some .BAT files may have problems if they were to crash before you quit DF. I recommend having the DF CD handy (even if you fixed it so you don't need it to play), so you can re-install DF should any problems arise.
Since nobody else has said this to you yet:
Welcome to DF-21.net!

I want to add that the reason Windows can't handle those files you download is because Dark Forces is a DOS program, and custom levels therefore require a manual installation, like NTK said.
Basically, to sum up what he said, for most levels you just extract the files to your DARK directory, and tread any readmes to see if it needs special installation stuff... some levels want you to put an LFD file into your LFD dir, for example, but most won't.
Then, run the batch file that came with the game, it'll usually do all the manual work of setting Dark Forces up to run the level.
If there is no batch file, only a GOB and a readme, type
DARK -uGOBNAME.GOB
To run the level.
Ooops, looks like that went a little bit more than adding on to what NTK said :p oh well.

I have a suggestion for when we explain the .gob parameter for DF. I think that we should always use mines as our example!
