Hey, I know I haven't been around much, but I wanted to just say that I have *not* given up DF editing. My new XP machine doesn't work real well for editing, so I brought my old system from home to do some DF editing...and then the hard drive bit the dust. Rest assured, I am going to get a new hard drive (don't worry, didn't lose any vital data) and continue my projects.

That's good to hear, I'd hate to see you abandon your current project.

Excellent. Let's roast a pig.
BTW, just now I found out that I have more posts than anyone who registered before me or on the same day.

Same with me. I run a mac G4 now instead of my beige G3 most of the time, so I have had little incentive to finish my projects because I'm too lazy to hook up my other computer. Maybe this weekend I'll do an all nighter and finish my damned level that you all have been waiting for (Considering it's been over a month since its intended release date).
Forgive my idiocy

what level is that.
i just started df eteting and i started a new level.
you start out in a big room(like most new comers levels) and you walk up a stiar case then there is a secret room with a dt gun and some medkits.
then there is a bar with alot of seats and a drink table. then im trying to get and elavater to go up to a new area. but the elavater whont stay adjoind to the top and botom level.
and in the bar i had a bad go trough with secand alt.
but i hope that in about 4 months it will be done.
it's my first level can anyone give me tips.
oh and ive done some cool stuff with logic.
like i gave a stormtrooper shild logic.
so in the game u put on stormtrooper armor.

Heh Heh, funny story.
my dying project
Tips Tips....hmmm.
I guess the first one would be to make up a good plot line for the level (i.e. what's it about).
Second tip: Don't ever rush a project, it will turn out very bad unless you are extremely good at it (I can't say that though, 'cause I haven't released anything).
Third tip: Use custom components or make your own. It makes things much more interesting.

Use more sectors than you think would be sufficient for each area. Use the extra ones to add detail: a row of reccessed lighting, short alcoves between columns, and the like.
Make sure you use a lot of INF. Simple elevators are only suited for small lifts, wher you might put in a few stairs instead. Multi-floor (3 or more) lifts should be large, and should use the "adjoin" command so that the door on each floor faces the same way. Also, you should use INF for things such as variable lighting (light switches/time of day), water currents, and other, more subtle techniques (such as getting around HOMing).
Of course, beware of HOMing. Make sure you can't see a lot of adjoined walls simultaneously, and split long wall sections into smaller pieces.

Use simple geometric patterns for inside areas, for example, placing lights on Euler's line of the inscribed triangle of largest diameter.
And hand morph outside areas, to give them a rouch and organic feel. If you want, I can show you some exapmles of good outside sectors.

Oh, another tip: Once you've gotten some nice-looking work, post some screenies here!

Is this stuff in the FAQ? Are you guys even still maintaining it?
Hey, if you're 11, DF is almost as old as you. Whoa.

Look, people keep in mind, whatever you do, don't press the "Post new topic" button. If you do, dancing stormtroopers, lead by a banana, will come and take you away in the night.
