I just got interested in playing Dark Forces again, and I can't figure out how to get the sound working. I've tried DOSBox and VDM Sound, but I can't figure out how to get the sound working. I've got SigmaTel audio on my Dell laptop, and the game just doesn't want to detect it, and I can't figure out a way to get it to work with VDM Sound. Any ideas?

DOSBox emulates older sound cards, so try using it to play DF but don't select your real card in-game. I think it says to use Soundblaster 16 or Soundblaster Pro. In case you don't know how to do that, try either IMUSE.exe or SETUP.exe in the DARK directory.

DOSBox should work out of the box.
Make sure the settings in dosbox.conf match the settings in setup.exe (you can try running setup.exe in DOSBox to make sure it's configured correctly).
VDMSound has a similar settings page for sound but it should work 99% of the time for most games (both VDMSound and DOSBox use settings that were common back then). Again you'd want to check to make sure those settings and the setup.exe settings match.
Both apps also have settings to turn Soundblaster support OFF, make sure it is on.
BTW, as a user of both, I recommend DOSBox. Dark Forces simply has too many glitches under NTVDM + VDMSound (an annoying one of which is a flickering hud).
