Actually, you wasn't, but I think we got that idea anyway. What I don't get, however, is why you think anyone of us would afford to buy any 3D Studio version just so we can render a file for you.

I see. A 3500 US$ program comes with your computer when you bought it... and you don't reflect on the fact that perhaps it doesn't always come with everyone else's computer.
Seriously, though, there are many ways you could solve your problem without commiting a crime, or asking other people to commit a crime for you.

I agree that 3D Studio always have been overpriced, yes.
Why would you want to open the 3D Studio file in AutoCAD?

Why?
Because 3d Studio really sucks! Auto Cad is alot better.

I agree that 3D Studio isn't particulary good. But to claim that AutoCAD has a better rendering engine than 3D Studio is just plain absurd.

Well, that's a matter of interpretation. Well, then, if you absolutely want an AutoCAD rendering of your 3D model, no one can stop you. But perhaps you should have specified that when you first posted your semi-request. It believe it was an obvious assumption to think that since you "asked" to have a 3D Studio file rendered, you wanted to have it rendered in 3D Studio.

I, quite frankly, didn't really care what they used but it's funniey how an almost requestish post turned into an argument over 3d programs

No, I don't think it's an argument over 3D programs. I think it's an attempt to get some kind of clarification from you what it is you want.
You say you don't want the file rendered in 3D Studio. You say you do want it rendered in AutoCAD. So you ask someone else to render it in AutoCAD. Fair enough.
But then you say you don't care what people use to render it in, and then I must ask... if it doesn't have to be 3D Studio or AutoCAD... why don't you do it yourself?

Because a worm got into my comp and destroyed half the dlls for autocad so it's useless and the disc has disappeared

Ah... you're trying to be difficult, aren't you? We just established that you didn't need it rendered in AutoCAD, so I ask again: why don't you do it yourself?

Wings 3D can open 3DS files. Best of all, it's 100% FREE.
There, no excuses now. Go render it.

Find the "news" box on the left... find " Latest Stable Rel: 0.98.19c", and select your os platform (mac or win) from the list. Then, find a mirror in the list you like, and click the icon next to it... this should start the download.
