AAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While doing some file checks for Spice Bust on Taloron, my computer crashed. And when I restarted my computer to work on it again, Dark Forge no longer could recognize the file. I did my best to save what I could, but the damage had already been dealt.

So, with great sorrow and depression, I regret to inform you that Spice Bust on Taloron is dead and will not be released. Damn it! Right before its phriking debut too!

11 months.... wasted.

Over 100 hours of work.... gone.

The positive feedback I got from the community.... now meaningless

:: Prepares for an angry mob ::

76 more hours I could have slept.... pissed away.

*SOB* *SOB*

I guess this means I'll be making more copies in the future with my other projects. I'm really sorry guys, but I didn't ask for that to happen.

I want to die!!!!

....oh well. Guess I'll get to work on Jedi Crystal. That looks promising.

Or maybe what I'll do is revive my Prelude to the Phantom project I started in September.

I might save what I tried to save and see if I can't get it to work, but it looks pretty grim right now.

Just yesterday I was like, "Gee, the release keeps moving back one day at a time... it'd be a shame if it never got released at all." Lo and behold. O_o

Maybe you might want to make backups in the future?

And, are you SURE you don't have a backup SOMEWHERE? A GOB file in your DARK dir? backups in WDFUSE\LEVELNAME\BACKUP?

I have a Mac by the way.

But yeah, I did look. I was able to save the level file and the object file, but I think the object file is corrupted. And the INF file is now but a memory. At least the level file is still there and I hope that isn't the file that's corrupted. But it's most likely the object file.

I could start over, but I worked too hard on it to begin again. I need a heavy break from it right now. I'll be working on Jedi Crystal instead for a while.

Again, I'm really sorry guys, but Tom, I could still use those sounds. Besides, Jedi Crystal sounds a whole lot better than SBoT.

You don't need to start over if you still have the .LEV file... I think the object file is the least that you can lose (of all in-game files). as for INF, if you remember how you did it, then you should be able to do it again.

Don't give up hope. And remember to have more backups, even if you only update them every few hours of working... It'l save you weeks of headaches. You could also try to use WDFUSE (get a cheap PC for <$200 easy), or use a "public" computer, as might be found at a library. WDFUSE auto-backups your .LEV, .INF, and .OBJ files, either every time you close WDFUSE, or every time you save. I've found it very useful.

Also, while I haven't used any other editors, WDFUSE would allow the replacement of 500 objects in possibly less than an hour, especially if you're simply placing generic sprites. INF is easily written; if you remember how everything fit together (more or less), you can type THAT up in perhaps another few hours (easily less than a full day).

I wouldn't say that SBoT is dead... I would put it in Vader's words:

"This is an unfortunate setback"

I guess you're right, but that little mishap sent me back about 2 months. Its almost like it doesn't want to be finished, kinda scary.

But I'll be taking a break from it for now.

When I write INF I write it all in a BBedit file and then put it in the Gob, I still always have the BBedit file itself, so if the gob screws up I can just put another copy of that in, if you are using a text editor instead of Dark Forge for your INF you should have an extra file, also, did you ever send it through GOBviewer? if you did then there is a chance that you still have to folder it created with all the level componets in it. These two things are worth a look, I know that sucks to lose all that work, also, maybe if you sent the Gob to a PC user, they could somehow salvage it with WDFUSE or something besides Dark Forge, you could try.

Trust me, I tried every scenario to get it back, but all I could muster was a semi new level file, and a corrupt object file that I had lying around the desktop. So bringing it up to par with what I had, it will probably be another month or two now.

That's shitty. It happened to me years ago with the Rock part 2, and I was so pissed off that I gave up DF editing for a few years. I know how you feel James. Take a break from it, come back to it an a while, and I can guarantee that you'll create a much better level.

Yeah, re-doing INF is never fun, but its given me better ideas for creating new scenarios and stuff before. The more you work on INF, the more you can use it creatively. Hopefully I'll get around to finishing Under Fire sometime this summer... Sad

Thanks for the support guys.

Don't worry Kanos, it's not completely dead, it's just set back about 2 or 3 months. But I have another project I want to work on right now that will be even better than SBoT.

Plus I have other obligations right now that are more important: Finding a better job, a girlfriend, and college. But the cool thing is that I still have time to do this stuff despite some setbacks I have doing so.

I think what I will do in the near future is make a showcase level for my unfortunately dying project Prelude to the Phantom. It's got a cool storm effect, as well as a good underwater diving/surfacing system I formulated. That should at least give a slight idea for what I'm capable of.

I would probably just take work for Prelude to the Phantom, and incorporate it into another project.

I dunno, I might actually alter it a little and add it to the Jedi Crystal for the jungle level. It would save me a lot more time. But doing so would get rid of half of what I have now, unless the impies had built a research facility in less than 3 days. I don't know what I'm going to do with it at the moment though, but I'll probably use a lot of the same ideas in it.

Well, if the Empire can throw up a garrison in 30 minutes (Every ISD has one), I think they could throw up a research facility in 3 days... Remember that the Galactic Empire had the ability to prefabricate most of their structures, and transport them wherever they were needed. Just take a look at Jerec's Valley Tower in JK: Kyle only got there mabye a day after Jerec, yet he already had a tower over 1 vertical mile in size.

Yeah, as a matter of fact, I'm using one of those mobile facilities (In my own vision Smile ) in the first level. I got a lot of it done in just three days because I'm not compelled to add onto it as I would a city or spaceport. I find that if I choose a kind of landscape instead of a city, the need for more things is severely reduced, but in a good way. This way, I don't get caught up in making new buildings just for eye candy. I'm sure Barry Brien knows what I'm talking about.

Anyway, this is the completion status right now (Just for fun)

Level 1: 20% complete
Level 2: 0 (or maybe 50)% complete
Level 3: 2% complete
Level 4: 0% complete
Level 5: 0% complete
Level 6: 0.1% complete

The first level is looking really good so far, almost reminds me of camping in a way.
