A Voc is a Sound file, and it depends if your Mac or PC to edit cutsceans, breifings, and WAX's.

To create a wax, you need a graphic editing program like photoshop or paintshop pro. Then you need a program to compile them.

MSPaint normally will work fine for making materials... Just assuming you know how to work around it's pallette limitations (it doesn't like anything that's not a 24-bit BMP)

For custom voc files, you need to get the sounds in a .wav file, at 8Khz (very low quality), then use one of the conversion programs availible on this site to change it into a .voc file.

Oops. Normally I don't make spelling mistakes like that... Thanks for pointing it out.

No problem. I thought it was rather fun, or perhaps even intentional.

I thought it was a bit fun, too. But it probably wasn't as helpful as was necessary...

It may be different for a PC, but on a mac, you have to use the compiling program to extract the states. This will save BMP files into separate state folders and they can be edited from there. Again, I don't use a PC so it may be different.

Or you could just do it all from scratch, but that is much harder to do most of the time.

I suggest you read the WAX editing article by Mark Heiddaker found here

Look in the DF Articles and go to the archives. You can't miss it.

Look for the BMP2DF utility set, which I belive comes in the WDFUSE download as bmp2df.zip. It contains, among other useful utilities, the command-line apps WAX2.EXE and 2WAX.EXE, which can decompile a wax into BMPs or recompile it again, respectively.

When you go to start DF, use the command:

DARK.exe -Shots

...instead of:

DARK.exe

...You can add as many of the parameters you like, such as "-U***.gob", which allows you to specify the .GOB file for playing...

I specifically stated it's a command line app, you have to run it from the command line. Razz

eargosedown, I highly reccomend an article called "Installing & Configuring Dark Forces". You can find it here. It will tell you hwo to get to the command prompt. I highly reccomend geting used to it, as it's essential for DF editing.

Apparently, the file "DOS4GW.EXE" is missing from you instalation. You can do one of two things:
 • You can search your DF CD, and copy the file over. Assuming your CD drive is D, search in C:\DARK.
 • You can simply re-install DF. While this would take longer, it is possibly easier.

Keep in mind, some of these utilities are quite old, even before the days of good ol' GUIs. Well, these run through command line parameters passed to them. wax2 did exactly what it needed to do, it opened up the NULL file. Alas, you didn't specify which file to use, and certain command line parameters, like whether to make a makefile for recomplilation, what format, bmp or pcx, for the output, etc. There is a helpful file downloaded with the package that describes all the parameters, and how to use them.
