I'll see how well I can answer these for you. I'm a little rusty in DF, but I'll see what I can do,

1: WDFUSE. Use the Secbase PAL.

2: WDFuse (get it from this site)

3: I forget, but there *is* an upper limit (and Barry broke it) WDFuse probbly has it listed somewhere.

4: A GMD is the background music files in DF. It's a form of midi. You can listen to it in some versions of Winamp.

5: a good photo editor and WDFuse

6: Don't think anyone has seen Jereth.

7: RTDM!!!!! It's posted on the site Wink we need a FAQ Wink

Moral of the story: If in doubt, WDFuse!!!

Here you go, eargosedown:
  • 1. If you want to make a texture that fits your selected pallette, use WDFUSE to export a texture that does work with the .PAL file in question. It is highyl reccomended that you use a default .PAL file; some 99% of all DF levels do, and I think Condition Red, and perhaps Discovery at Ironfort, and The Dark Tide (Either episode that's out) might be the only levels that used a custom .PAL file, and turned out nicely. Most ofte, people edit the .CMP file, but you shouldn't need to worry about that if you don't have a few specific special effects in mind. If you just want the red lighting, there should have been a copy of SECBASE.PAL with the red lighting over in the downloads section, though (mysteriously enough), we don't. I'm sure somebody would be willing to send you one if you asked, though...
  • 2. Murgo made a utility called CMPED, and it's over in the downloads section, under "Utilities and Editors". Of course, it's free.
  • 3. I don't think there's any real limit. There might be one there, but I know excessively long textures have been made. Jedi Cheddar, in his "Training on Aurora" showcase level, included a huge texture that's used for the scroing system at the shooting gallery, and I believe it exceeeds 1000 pixels in size, so you shouldn't have to worry about any limit all that much.
  • 4. GMD files, called GMIDI, and also known as MIDI2 (I think), are the DF version of MIDI music files, just as it calls its .WAV files VOC files. In other words, GMDs are the music for the game, unless you follow Fish's method for music... (There's a tutorial for that in the articles section if you're interested)
  • 5. I believe there's a tutorial that explains how to create cutscenes for Dark Forces, over in the handy downloads section, under "Tutorials".
  • 6. I don't think any of us have even heard from him for a few years now... As for what you were originally asking permission for, I don't even remember now...
  • 7. Please phrase your question in the form of a question Wink

The Moral of the StoryTM is:

The downloads section is your friend! Also, the articles is worth a good look as well.

You're welcome. As for the storyline, I would say go ahead, or simply find a different plot line. Making your own allows for more freedom, as well as points for being original.

That's fine. Personally, though, I think that it might be more difficult to split a story into two levels than three, as you'll need to worry about making them much more balanced in respect to each other, in both story and length.
