I don't think much of that Anti-missile laser (Lasers consume too much power), but I like that bending gun!

I still like the bending rifle better...

Laser weaponry consumes WAY too much power - A laser rifle that would be comparable in damage to an M-16 would burn, in a single shot, more juice than an average home (with a bunch of overclocked PCs) would burn in several months! I'm not too sure about how exact that figure it, but it still gets the point across.

In a twisted joke, perhaps laser weaponry will be okay, now that the US has Iraq to take oil from... (even if the US "buys" it, it will come at a HUGE discount.)

That's another reason we don't have Railguns (of considerable size). The power alone to fire one round would be able to power New York City for about 3 days to a week. And it can't be made conventional because of the recoil physics. The force exerted is proportional to the force feed back. If I remember correctly, it's Newton's second or third law: For every action comes a reaction.

Wouldn't the bending gun be difficult to fire because of that law? Still cool looking though. I can't wait until they finally develop optic camoflauge (Not too far off either! Maybe possible to use by 2007!) Cool .

That's the third. The second basically says that F=ma. The first talks about inertia. The one about gravity is F=(G . m1 . m2) / (r^2). I can't recall any others right now.

That's sort of the third law. The third law actually says that when a force acts directly upon an object, there is a normal force that is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to the force applied. So basically that only applies when an object is directly pushing against another object.

This is what keeps your fingers from falling through the keyboard when you type.

When you say "directly pushing", you mean a force that's normal to the surface. Or the normal component of any force on the surface.

When I type, sometimes my fingers come down at an angle. Only the vertical component depresses the keys.

As far as for the bending gun, what I've been able to understand of it, it uses a motor, as well as some strong locking mechanism, to dissapate whatever recoil that the pistol on the end would have (not that pistols have a lot of recoil...).

As far as railguns, what is the largest made? They're particle accelerators, aren't they? Those definitely consume large quantities of power...

Another note on prototypical weaponry: Although I don't have any links to cite, there had been an agreement to try constructing an armed spacecraft by the USDod (United States Departement of Defense). The plans called for refiting a decommisioned shuttle with a laser in its cargo bay. Of course, the oldest shuttle was Columbia, as this was a few years ago. In fact, Columbia was supposed to have been decomissioned sometime in 1999.

Also, I wonder when the US will decide to try to build an anti-matter bomb. I certainly hope that they don't, as a test of it will probably cause too much "Collateral Damage"...

At least it seems that the USDod Isn't pursuing plasma weaponry... (which is what the gun on my AUTOMATIC SUPERCHARGED CONCUSSION RAIL CANNONTM theorietcally uses). The amount of energy required to keep hydrogen in a plasma would make lasers look like LEDs, and Accelerators look like 1HP motors, and H plasma would eventually destabilize, and fuse into Helium.
