I remember this is one of the first df addons I played that really stood out. It had a familiar setting from one of the movies, and lots of custom components. Initially I was amazed by this level. Looking out at the platform where Luke and Darth duelled, and seeing other familiar places was great.
I played this level again last night. It has not aged well at all. The custom components are amateurish looking, the mission goals are ridiculous (rescue Rebus, Madine and get the data tape). The architecture, is quite impressive, but the texturing is average. The level is quite easy. There is very little sign of the city itself. No civilians, no stunning cityscapes. The level has this overall rushed, patchy, amateur feel to it. Though it's fun to play, it's no classic.

Meh, i disagree with that. At the time, it was aclassic, and still consider it one. Its the only level out thus far to capture areas of bespin nicely. I really liked this level, but i understand people are entitled to their own opinions, so I dont mean to argue with you. I just liked that. Actually, i think ill go revue it for my website right now.

A few comments from me, for once.

The problem levels in familiar Star Wars settings is that your work not only faces the challenge of pleasing the DF gamer, it also faces comparison with the location it is based on.

As a Dark Forces level, I thought it was better than average, although handing the player the concussion rifle right at the start let things down a bit. The Bespin setting allowed the authors to get away with placing aliens and Imperials together.

Generally the texture choices and architecture were pretty much spot on, with the white halls and corridors recreating the Bespin feel. The dining room where Vader lay in wait for the Rebels was instantly recognizable, and the exterior views and lighting worked very well- although perhaps a red sky texture might have improved things.

The carbon freezing chamber was a bit disappointing, though- such a dramatic location from the film could and should have been given a bit more time and attention to recreate the feel of the area. And the "Gundark Trooper Phase 1" looks a bit silly, in the one place where you might actually be looking forward to an appearance from Mr. Fett.

This level was definitely one of the best of its era, and it still stands out today. It doesn't quite cut it against more recent Hall of Famers, but this is only down to the last few details- with a bit more detail in one or two familiar locations, a better sky texture and perhaps a couple of Cloud Cars whizzing by outside on VUEs.

The Bespin of The Empire Strikes Back benefitted greatly from the Special Edition. Perhaps this level could too...?

Best bit: The funky blue Gammorean Guards.

Worst bit: The area with strobe lighting. Ow!

Those G-guards were created with Framed64 by yours truely. I was messing around with color replacement in code. I have a gold bot that went through the same treatment. Bespin represented the first level with new waxes. I made that possible with Cyra but I claim no fame as an artist.

Oh yeah..anyone ever see Rush Limbaugh pounding a desk, hidden in an old level. My wife drew the animation.

I've seen a FME of that floating around...
