Brief fanfic-written in response to a SW writing challenge to use certain words in a brief fanfic. Without further ado...

Kyle Katarn stood in landing bay twelve on Coruscant. "Where are you, Jan?" he asked to nobody.

"Stop right there, Katarn," a mechanically filtered voice called behind him. Kyle froze. I know that voice.

"I knew you'd have to get those encryption keys from the ISB," the voice said flatly. "After you stole that encrypted navigational information off Nar Shaddaa."

"Keep talking," Katarn said casually, wondering if he should try to just duck and run. Naw...that'll make me a sitting nerf. "It seems that's what your best at, Fett."

Though the mercenary couldn't see it, Fett smiled behind his faceplate as he stepped out of the deep shadows that ringed that the landing bay. "Nice try, Katarn. Jabba prefers I take you alive. I understand he just got a new blood spider in; he wants to see it feed."

Katarn turned a tad green at the thought. Blood spiders were some of the nastiest smelling creatures he'd ever had the misfortune to encounter. "I think I'll pass on that one," Kyle said carefully.

"I don't think so," Fett replied.

"I do," Katarn said, hearing a familiar whine. All I need are a few seconds to get on board.

"This will be a pleasure," Fett said. "You're no Jedi, but you have caused me quite a bit of grief. You're quite hard to catch up to."

"Thank you," Kyle said, sweating. As long as he doesn't stun me first...

The bounty hunter couldn't seem to resist the urge to gloat over his ambushed prey, however. "Ah, well...even the mighty Katarn has to die sometime. I'm sure you won't feel much when that blood spider starts ripping you apart."

"Or maybe," Katarn said, the whine loud enough that Fett could hear it, too, "that blood spider will have to settle for you!" Kyle shoulder-rolled as the Moldy Crow roared overhead. As the mercenary had hoped, Fett had looked up at the descending ship, giving Kyle a brief moment to act.

A blaster bolt whizzed past his shoulder, and he found his Bryar in his hand. Fett's arsenal of weapons sprayed suppression fire over Kyle, but the mercenary refused to give ground as he scattered return fire at the bounty hunter. Gotta get to the ship! Gotta get on board!

"Jan!" he bellowed.

The little courier ship turned as if on cue, bringing its lasers to bear on the bounty hunter. Fett fired his jetpack, rising into the air. He turned his heavier weaponry on the Crow, but the little ship's shields sprang to life.

Now's my chance... Unhooking a thermal detonator from his belt, Kyle thumbed the thirty-second trigger and rolled it across the docking bay. "Jan," he called into his comlink, "get the ship up aboard fifty meters or we're going to have to do a lot of maintenance when we get back to the fleet."

"And leave you here for Fett?" a staticky voice called back.

"Trust me," Kyle said.

The Crow's repulsorlifts increased in tempo. The little ship began to rise into the air, and Fett turned his weaponry back toward Kyle.

"So long, Katarn," Fett shouted as he leveled a concussion rifle at the mercenary.

"I could say the same to you!" Kyle hollered back. Rather than trying to return fire, the mercenary hit the deck.

"What the-" The bounty hunter didn't get to complete his thought as the thermal detonator exploded, hurling the hovering Fett hundreds of meters through the air.

"Now get me out of here," Kyle shouted into the comlink over the ringing in his ears. "Let's bail before Fett gets back!"

Here's an idea, how about we have a contest here for who can write the best DF fanfic. Winner gets to have his story posted in the articles section!

Anyhow, I wanted to write something ('cause I'm a writer).

The Ruins of Talay

The Crow lurched as it broke through the atmosphere of the planet where Talay once stood. Plumes of smoke rose over the mountains of the once peaceful planet, an epologue of a disaster that had occured without any kind of warning. After hearing the briefing from Mon Mothma about the attack, Kyle just had to see it for himself. Never had he known of anything capable of doing so much damage in such little time...not without some extensive space bombardment. In some ways, it greatly bothered him but he couldn't quite pinpoint why.

It was already dusk, a ghostly dusk. The kind of silent dusk after a massacre. The only thing that seemed alive on the planet was the little ship that was moving towards the ruins. Below, the city was smoldering, some of the areas had been completely destroyed, leaving behind the skeletal remains of what once was. Seeing all the destruction made Kyle wonder why the city had been destroyed and not just the base. Everything was ruined.

"Jan, bring me as close to the base...or at least what's left of it...as you can. I'll call you when I find something." Kyle was beginning to gear up, loading his trusty modified Bryer Pistol. It was once a sporting rifle, but Kyle had modified it to be a more compact and easier to handle pistol. It got him out of a lot of tight spaces in the past, even if it was practically an antic.

"You're the boss Kyle." Jan said sounding just a little nerve-wrecked by the destruction that was unfolding before her. "I would be careful though, I noticed an imperial dropship in orbit before we came in, they probably have troops down here looting the place."

Great, all I need is a squad of stormtroopers. I hope I'm getting paid enough for this. Kyle though to himself. This would make the job of finding evidence for the Dark Troopers just a little more difficult than expected. But then again they were just stormtroopers, he would be able to deal with a few easily on there own with his expert training from his days in the old republic. Shock troops couldn't even compare to him.

The Crow came to a small clearing that looked relatively undamaged compared to the rest of the city. Kyle grabbed onto a drop strap and let Jan lower him to the surface. The air smelled of death, and Kyle guessed that the smoldering corpses were causing the awful stench and it made him gag a little.

"I'll be waiting in the upper atmosphere, let me know when you find something." Jan radioed to Kyle. With that, the Crow rose, turned away from Kyle and sharply made a rise to the atmosphere. Now Kyle really felt alone. Here he was left on a lifeless planet searching for something unkown to him. He didn't know what he would find, maybe nothing. But if the Alliance was going to pay him anything, he had to at least bring back something unusual.

Kyle holstered his pistol and made his way towards the rebel base.

Hmm... That was kind of fun. We should do a joint project Casey.

Landing bay 12?

That's like me saying, "Patrick stood at the corner of Elm and Oak street on Planet Earth."

Talay Continued...

Everything was in ruins. Skeletal remains of the civilian residences stood like abominations. All around, there were blaster burns on walls and structures, but the damage was unlike anything Kyle had ever seen before.

Kyle's foot bumped into something. He looked down and found a corpse at his feet. It's skeleton with burned flesh just hanging on seemed to be contorted, as if to be screaming at some unknown terror that was known as the Dark Trooper. Judging from the damage the body had sustained, it was shot at point-blank with some high powered weapon.

The wind picked up and blew some of the dense smoke away, and Kyle looked around to see countless more bodies, all sharing the same characteristics. Men, women... and children. All had been slain. But Kyle wasn't the least bit surprised, knowing imperial tactics, they wouldn't waste time sparing lives.

Kyle heard something behind him, something live. It was a clicking sound of footsteps, like that of plasteel armor. Stormtroopers. And they weren't far behind. luckily, the smoke gave him plenty of cover, but it wouldn't be long before the troopers found him. Kyle ducked behind some rubble and could just make out a squad of stormtroopers through the smoke. There skeleton-like armor made them look like reapers of death in the dusky twilight. He readied his pistol and waited in case the troopers caught sight of him. Although Kyle knew he could easily take care of a couple of troops, he didn't know how many more there were out there, and he didn't want to cause such a big riot to find himself before a whole garrison of troops.

Now that Kyle knew there were imperials about, he would have to be more careful. He glanced at his PDA and looked at the map supplied by Jan. The main headqaurters was about a kilometer away and who knew what condition it was in. But before he could get into the base, he would have to turn on the backup generator to get by the security station.

The troops halted for a moment, chatted a little bit, and went on their way. Kyle rose from his hiding place and continued on. The generator wasn't too far away and there was plenty of cover if he needed it.

After trudging through the maze of rubble filled streets, Kyle found the backup generator. Kyle was a little bemused to find that the bacup generator was an old hydroelectric generator. A small generator like this would only supply about a quarter of the city with power. But it was the power generator Jan had said linked directly to the base in case of emergency.

The control panel was inside a small alcove over the core capacitor, and Kyle had little trouble getting the thing started. There was a low humming that grew in pitch, and nearby lights began to glow. Kyle could almost imagine how confused the imperials in the vacinity were when the power came back on. But that would also mean that someone here was alive, and they'd be looking for him soon.

I'll have more later.

Blood spiders? What are they? If you're reffering to the spider that freaked out C-3PO in Episode VI, I believe they're called brain spiders. Oddly enough, whatever they're called, they seem to be not in the Star Wars database, or it's a completely different name...

Patrick- I wrote this story in a hurry, as it was the last entry in a contest. "12" was one of the words that we had to use, and I just kinda slapped it in.

NTK- Blood spiders were mentioned in Crispin's Han Solo trilogy, right after Solo pulled some daring maneuvers to allow Jabba to escape some assassins but ended up upsetting Jabba's "blood spiders."

You're thinking of the B'omarr monk -- named such in Tales from Jabba's Palace and picked up in other sources, including the canon source Secrets of Tatooine that came out after Episode I. Which makes it strange that it's not in the databank at starwars.com -- it's been canonized.

(sorry I jumped in on this late -- haven't been around for a while)

Oh, yeah, the monks developed this wierd procedure whereby they removed their brains and stored them in these machines. The purpose of this was to free them from bodily distractions so they could spedn time meditating, philosophising and general having a dull time.
