Hello again,

Just a friendly debate here to start the week off right. Princess Irish and I are having a debate regarding some of the architecture of our level Gall; speciffically the enterance to a large hanger bay. The first idea would be a single diagnal staircase that is seldome seen in DF and would be somewhat difficult, but worth the effort, to design and allow the player to hide from enemies underneath as shown here:

http://www.gwmo.com/df-21/gall/stepsa.gif

The other idea would be both a horizontal and a verticle staircase that would, at first, block the players view of any enemies and then make it somewhat more difficult to find the exit in a hurry when the enemy is in persuit as shown here:

http://www.gwmo.com/df-21/gall/stepsb.gif

Please let us know your thoughts on which would be viewed as more complex and if you would like any additional shots from inside the level.

May the Force be with you...always...

Diagonal stairs aren't hard. I used Pythagorum's Theorum and calc.exe and was able to make diagonal stairs of a uniform width and height. No big deal. Smile

Although I ccast the vote for 2, it really depends on the size of the stairs. If WDFUSE's scale there is 4DFU, then you have plenty of room for two staircases, and it would be reccomended. Pushing DF as far as you can without HOMing is impressive, and a pair of stairs looks nice.

However, if your scale for the grid is 2 DFU, then use only one staircase. after working with them excessively, I do not reccomend making significant passages only 8 DFU wide. Reserve that size for air ducts, and other passages that shouldn't see normal walking use.

Or...you could just use the 45 degree wall with which I began and use a little command called
"Extrude Wall". Razz Seriously though, we plan to make the staircase so that the player can
venture underneath (i.e. adjoin the sides et all) and are merely curious as to which may receive
a higher rating for complex architecture.

PS: My bad, the image is set to WDFUSE 8.

Math?? Confused Theorums'?? Confused I have to admit that I don't do the math thing. I have a Journalism degree and perfer writing to math. But when it comes to design I go with what looks good to the eye and in DF I go with what would present the best challenge enemy wise.

In general, it is usually the best idea to create the map that would look the best... You can always do a little modification to make the enemies more challenging... I don't think the stormie logic is smart enough to follow the player down staircases, anyway.

I don't think real stormies would be smart enough to follow people down stairs either Wink

I always thought LEC did a good job with designing DF's stormie. It's very realistic, except that, unlike in the films, I can't kill on in a single shot...

I think Raven made the stormies there a little to intelligent... They're Imperial Stormtroopers! They shouldn't know anything!

But it's more realistic on what they *should* be like. The empire doesn't waste millions training each one just for them to die.

Well yes, I must agree, especially remembering Obi-Wan from ANH:

These blast marks are too accurate for sand people. Only Imperial Stormtroopers would be so precise

Even though stormtroopers, one for one, should be able to beat any other infantry, it's just fun to tear them down! Very Happy

Hello again,

Alright, since it's been over 5 weeks since the beginning of this little debate, and about a month since the last reply, it's time to conclude.

Although the results were 7 to 3 in favor of the diagonal staircase, we have been able to find no way to tunnel underneath without inviting a rather large and persistant Homm monster the size of a Wampa; so we compromised. We went with a diagonal entry to a double staircase. Rest assured that we will be adding several solid diagonal staircases in the near future and will be adding more images to the Gall project page just as quickly.

May the Force be with you...always...

Glad to know that you've gotten it worked out, and that you're making progress. Screenies might be nice!

Good evening,

As promised, we have added a new image of a hanger bay as seen from the top of the new double staircase on the Gall page. As the caption states, this is really a composite of three screen shots taken at Yaw 315, 0, and 45 that were cropped together (similar to the digitally extended scenes in The Phantom Menace).

Looks Impressive... Between those two staircases will be a wicked location to place stormies... I'd suggest placing a sort of outpost-like-thingy there, thus turning a running player into a shooting gallery for some bored troopers on watch.

Ok, have you and Princess Irish been conspiring again? That was the primary reason she wanted a double staircase there in the first place. If you think that's impressive, just wait for the next set of images. We're playing around with different cinematic effects as well. That last set we cropped into one panoramic wide screen; the shots under the double staircase will be more of a storyboard format.
