Disclaimer
Sorry if I'm maybe asking something what has already been discussed here.

Does anyone know, is there a maximum file size that a GOB file is allowed to have to run properly in Dark Forces, and is there any maximum file size of any of its components, for them to be correctly processed by the Dark Forces engine?
Thanks.

As far as I know, there's no reachable limit. There may be a thereotical limit, though. I imagine that the theorietical maximum size might be anywhere from 256 megabytes to two full gigabytes (the largest is some 12.4MB for DT I, I have no clue for episodes III/IV). As for component size, I think that it would match the maximum size for the .GOB file. So far, .LEV files can be up to 4 megabytes, as evidenced by AoNS (I've also made/disposed of a level that was equal in size) I can't imagine any credible-appearing WAX that would be larger than that.

As for LFD files, (if you're interested), there seems to be no limit whatsoever. If need be, you can split an ANIM or VOC into several, and my DF directory somehow holds an LFD-esque file (.~D~), that when examined, seems to resemble LFD components for ADV. The file is some 30MB, larger than any other file I have in my DF folder.

I think there's a 4gb limit on individual file sizes on a GOB (file sizes are stored in longs if I remember correctly).

Out of curiousity, Fish, what is it that you might need to know this for? A massive .VOC file? Or is it an ANIM, or something else?

And I think Nottheking wins, as the index is (according to the DF specs) created with signed 32 bit integers, and as negative file positions make no sense, that gives us 31 bits that are actually useful.

And I think not. The maximum component size depends entirely on the data structures used for that particular component type.

2048 Mbits seems to be what it would be. I mean. . . it just seems logical.

Well, yes, I'd like to know how long can a VOC soundtrack be, and how many of them could (at least theoretically) fit into a GOB.

My guess is that you'll make a long, epic level with many different areas, each with their own .VOC soundtrack. At least, that's what I'd like to see you make... Just remember that we don't care to play it if it takes too long to download... (I'd put it at 200MB download tops, that's 10 minutes for me!) Wink

I don't have any specific plans yet. It takes quite a lot of work to compose/practice/record/remix a good soundtrack anyway.
But, if I'll do a new Dark Forces mission, I'll try to convince my band to record several new original soundtracks again, as it was the case for Fortress Quadrigon.
