...I found something that should probably be added to that file that we direct 50% of all newcomers to.

After copying the files from the CD to the HD, remove the "read only" tag from the file LOCAL.MSG. If you don't DF will fail to start, claiming "Unable to load LOCAL.MSG".

This allows you to play it without running the installer and without having the CD in the drive?

It allows you to play it on any windows operating system without using the installer, yes. However, you still have to do the CD.ID patch to be able to run it without the disk...

Literally patch, or do you just need to put the file there?

Scape Goat, you updated the article, but didn't add what I said! The problems of forgetting that step is across all Windows platforms!

I have something to add as well. When using VDMSound, if you experience SFX playing too fast ingame, choose a "wave" device in the VDMS shortcut file instead of a "DirectSound" drvice for adlib. This should fix the speed, although I now experience minor hiccups in the music, it's more preferable.

OK, I pasted the bit about local.msg into the article. Let me know if there's a problem.

If anyone wants to add something else; type up exactly what you want added and let me know where to insert it.

Thanks. I recall many people asking about the problem addressed by that little line...

After "Check "Try to reduce CPU usage" and push the slider some amount to the left. (Experimentation may be necessary)." put "If the sound effects and voices play too quickly in-game, under the Adlib tab, select a "WAVE" device, and not a DirectSound device. This should fix the sound, although the music may have a couple quirks in it now, it should be preferable to the quick sfx.
