Another of Eric Pauker's brilliant works. Although unlike mnay of the other newer levels, Parux doesn't sport anything that's truly spectacular. However, it does convey an accurate feeling of the scale of the place, as well as providing excelent play.

The arcitecture is somewhat simple, but the design is still servicable. Texturing is done rather well, as I don't turly disagree with any of his choices, and there seem to be no major errors in stitching.

As for enemies, I'm only slightly puzzled as to why the Empire would allow a rag-tag band of rogues to stay so close to a critical location. I thought that they would be less careless. Nonetheless, enemies are well placed, and provide adequate challenge for their logics.

My favorite portion, though, is the transport thingy. That sector currently holds the record for the longest distance viewable from one spot, yet there's no noticable HOMing (by the time it HOMs, the passage appears no more than a single pixel wide). This was a rather devious piece of work, and is definitely good inspiration for what's possible with INF.

Overall, this is a solid 5-star level. Any serious DFer should really look at this, one of the better levels out there.
  • Quality: 88%
  • Atmosphere: 93%
  • Innovation: 89%
  • Gameplay: 89%
  • Overall: 90%

Eric Pauker did very well in creating this level. It seems as if he tries something new in all the levels he does. Occassionally, I'll come back to this level.

There was a lot I liked about this level. For one, I liked the tram at the end, and I don't know why. I just thought it looked cool. Texturing was done very well, and I couldn't really find anything wrong with any of the textures. Gameplay was fun, and interesting no matter where you went. and I liked the energy generator towards the end.

However, the cave (or mine shaft) was a little dull looking, and the dead imperials had a radius so it made things a little difficult to get around.

But other than those two things, I really enjoyed it and I come back to it constantly for reference. 8.9 of 10.

Hey, I think Parux was one of the greatest Dark Forces levels of all time. I played it over and over, though many times it crashes.

Parux must of broken new ground with the colorfull scenery when you first go out on the ledge to search for the blue key. A real feeling of a mountain ledge and open sky background.. I thought it was fantastic.

Riding on that transport car was also fun and well done.

And I like the whole indoor cave scene - I thought that well done also.

Good points, Sheldon Smile

Those are the reasons I still play that level.

Topic: Asteroid vs Energy Mine On Parux

I was interested to see Patrick's nomination of Asteroid for the HoF...
There is a level by Eric Pauker in my "7th choice" spot (8th, including Kurek..) - but it's Energy Mine on Parux. Both have similar strong points (great backdrops, architecture etc) but I prefer Parux...

I found quite a few bugs and annoyances with Asteroid, such as the lift shafts where you reach the top, open the door and before you can kill anyone you're whisked away and have to ride the lift the whole way again. Also, it crashed twice on me before I could complete it.

Sure it looks gorgeous, but I felt Parux "worked" better (and the author's technique of playing smugglers against the Imperials in one section of the level was fantastic). The central energy tap was really well done too.

Unless the level that gets voted in this time isn't one I nominated, Parux will be among my nominations for HoF round 3...

Does anyone agree/disagree? I feel like a nice "heated debate", (and "Wedit vs Wdfuse" is hardly kicking off over there...)

Well, I just think that both Parux and Asteroid were incredible levels. It's just so sad that Erik Pauker isn't here for us to thank him . Anyway, the thing with Erik Pauker is his unbelievable textures. In Parux, so REALLY felt like you were on the cliffs, and in Asteroid you REALLY believed you were in an asteroid, despite the low resolution of Dark Forces.

For now, I like Parux most, but that's only because Asteroid kept crashing on me.

Personally, I liked Asteroid better because of the textures. Unfortunately, it ran very poorly in some sections, but I have never had it crash on me that I know of. It had some cool effects like the storage bay blowing up, the power core, and the fighter flying through the inside of the base inself! Perux had strong points too, obviously. It as well had good textures, great attmosphere, and gameplay. But I liked Asteroid better. Plus it was hard to find where to download because no one had it up because (I'm assuming) was hard to run.
I guess what I'm saying is "ASTEROID IS BETTER YOU IDIOTS!!"

How's that for arguing?

Yeah, Parux lovers be damned!
It's good too...

I just get really annoyed when a level crashes. I can put up with the biggest HOM in the world- you can always use LANTFH if that happens. But if the level crashes, you're back to the start and you don't know if you'll be able to play past where you were up to anyway. It's rather frustrating.
Asteroid just didn't outweigh its bugs for me. (But then I'm sure there are people out there who Parux crashed on...)

Why would you want a TIE flying through the centre of the base, when you can ride a subway car through a geothermal mine?

(No, I haven't thought that one through very far)

If I remember these two levels correctly, Asteroid was a little better. It crashed on me once or twice, but the biggest problem was that small space that you couldn't fit through.

Small space? Where was that?

Scape-O, you must be talking about disabling the bases defenses. To throw the 3 switches, I always have to use LABUG to get past the power column. Has ANYONE done it without LABUG?

And there I was thinking I'd just done it in the wrong order...
In the PDA it says you're supposed to deactivate the defences before blowing up the fuel supply, but I did it the other way round and thought I'd got stuck due to the author neglecting to make sure the mission worked in a linear fashion...

There are a couple of tight squeezes in Parux too, come to think of it. But you can get through them by running- which just kills you on Asteroid.

Hmm...

That's right, the power core. All you have to do is run through the openings to squeeze through. And for me, I couldn't disable the core without the defences first. It didn't work that way, unless I did things differantly.
So are pH and I the only Asteroiders? Or do we have to beat it into you guys?!?

Patrick Haslow

Sorry, Geoffrey.
I really wasn't ignoring your earlier pleas for help!
I got it to run by tweaking it in Dark Forge, and playing with the .O file in Bbedit Lite, etc... I don't remember exactly what I did- but maybe I should do it again for a Mac friendly version!

Fenwar
Dark Trooper Phase 2 posted September 24, 2000 12:23

I always thought the Mac version had a more robust engine... what sort of things caused the problem? I'd be interested to know as my level is probably going to be right on the limits for objects, memory and sectors.
Does the textured and angled 3do cause any problems?

I think the crashes on my PC may have been caused by that background, which warps if you look at it from certain angles. I've had other crashes when textures start warping, for example on textured 3dos when the player gets close up.

(I'm getting the impression that it might well be my machine that can't quite handle the pressure in some of these cases though...)

I've never noticed a 3DO that didn't warp at close ranges, in DF or JK. And I'm not sure, but I think the MacDF engine might be less fault-tolerant, but with higher limits. I didn't know we'd found any memory limits on either platform, besides with GMID etc.

Fenwar
Dark Trooper Phase 2 posted September 26, 2000 11:39
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are memory limits on people's machines though... I don't know whether there are still people running DF on older 8MB machines- mine's only 28MB as it is- but I certainly wouldn't want to go over 16MB, for everyone's sakes.
(I've had trouble assigning memory to DOS programs under Windows in the past, and wouldn't want anyone to change system settings just to play a DF level.)

All textured 3dos warp up close, but do they crash levels for anyone else?

My PC also struggled to draw the giant planet BM outside, which warped slightly as I moved around. That's my PC for you, though.

Was it part of the sky texture, or up on a black wall like in Betrayal?

I just deleted all the objects in Asteroid, and it works. It just seems a bit empty...
The architectures neat, a bit bleak in places though.

I've said it a million times, but most problems like that are object related. Almost all of them, actually.
