I think some serious consideration should be taken towards tweaking the registration backend and frontend just slightly enough so bots can no longer register...

For the most part, I've tried logging in (close to) daily and just deleting spambots as they register, but this is getting to be pretty ineffective. I've turned on the option that requires all new accounts to be approved by an admin, so things should start shaping up now.

That's most certainly good to hear, though does this mean you'll now be bombarded by spam-bots asking you to approve them? Razz

Apparently so, I get maybe 3-4 a day (of which maybe 1 a week is an apparently genuine new user, or at least a cleverer breed of spambot... One which has figured out how to pick a homepage that looks like one the sort of person who'd register here might have Wink )

I think we need to upgrade to the latest version of phpBB as soon as possible, I just don't have the time to do it right now. Sad

You might also try downloading the mod called "LiveValidation" from the phpBB site. It checks the emails registering to see if they're real accounts or not. It helped significantly decrease the number of spambots on the forums I run.

That mod's looking more and more appetizing... I'll check it out.

I've installed it, but I think we still need admin approval... somehow. There were one or two other anti-spambot mods I could install too. I'll hopefully get a chance to do that within the next week or so.

I have now installed another anti-spam mod to prevent bots from actually posting (it includes forcing a time delay between generating the posting form and actually submitting it; if a real user posts too fast they will simply be taken to the preview page and can re-submit). I've also installed a mod for the admin interface which makes deleting spambot accounts a lot easier.

As usual, let me know if anything goes wrong.
