Should we keep it or phase it out?

Yesh, I've been a bit slackerly with it lately, but there hadn't been terribly much participation in the polls beforehand, so I starting wondering if it'd be worth it to keep up the feature. The votes could 1) be made to last for up to three to four days, and 2) be publicized on the front page (something in the vein of "vote going on now!" banner below the current SotW)...

Thoughts?

My vote - change it to Screen of the Month.

If there are too many entries, the poll co-ordinator can shortlist one or two from each author.

I want to see one of Matt's winter screenshots on the homepage! Smile

(Does it even have to be a poll? Could we not just do it as an "editorial" feature? That would save a heck of a lot of time and it's not like it's going to generate huge controversy. And if it did it might be the kind of debate that we actually do want to have here... Smile )

I agree, Screen of the Month would be much more doable for this site, since my screenshot and this new one have practically been up for a month each. Laughing

Here's the part when I get to say "I told you so!" Let me quote what I said during the original discussion for the SotW idea here.

Anyway, I still do want to see new stuff on here every now and then. Of course, I no longer post almost every day, (now that it's not every day that somebody even posts here) but I do now happen to have high-grade DSL at home, so that solves another thing... Now I just need to fiddle with DF to make it work on my new machine.

That's pity indeed. I nostalgically remember when DF-21 was swarming with posts (sometimes 30+ daily) and many of the discussions were on hard-core DF topics like comments on a certain level architecture, endless INF issues, experiments etc. I'd like DF-21 to have one day such spirit again.

Or I am just a too nostalgic person (getting old?).

Gotta have realistic expectations. Ten years is a long time, especially for a computer game. For all practical purposes, there probably shouldn't be anybody working on DF at all. If we want more levels, then we should encourage more 500 sector "plant the sequencer charge" missions.

As for the Screen of the Week deal, as I've said before, we should do away with voting and polls altogether. Someone in charge could set them up two or three weeks in advance. It's simple and practical.

I agree, it would also add some surprise and anticipation.

And you can take my silence over the past few days to mean "ditto, ditto, definitely agreed."

Then why does the front page still saying "Screenshot Of The Week 12/17," huh, "Action Jackson?" Razz
