I just pulled out my old DF project from way back when (It had been in the works longer than any of SG's), and my goodness, I remember so much of what I had planned. Of course, it's nowhere near done, and it seems highly unlikely that it ever will. Sort of sad, really.

I've kinda just forgotten about editing Dark Forces, and have moved on to making massive expansions for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind that will likely have the exact same fate...

...However, of the three levels (a single mission and the first two parts of a 5-8 level series) I currently have, I do know what I do next, and might possibly even work to finish them, but I've essentially given up on trying to run Dark Forces on my Athlon64 machine, and I'm NOT going to run the game through emulation.

Athlon64? Eh?

I'm running it through WinXP and due to the general bitchiness of getting DF to run at all; my graphics card isn't boosting the graphics, can it even make that much of a difference anyway? What is so bad about emulating it... wait, am I even emulating it? Heh, my knowledge on the topic is rather limited.... by the way my graphics card is a GeForce4 MX420.

My processor; the system currently is running Windows ME, and I'm going to install Windows XP Pro fairly soon, in addition to Windows ME.

First of all, ray-casting based engines CAN'T be accelerated with a graphics card; those are designed for polygon-based engines ONLY. (actually, there was a single exception, where a certain line of 3DFX cards could be used to speed up Outlaws, but OL was a DirectX game, unlike DF) This is the same reason why a program like Terragen or a 3D-modelling program will run at a low framerate, even if, say, you have a Radeon X850XT PE. That's because THEY happen to also use a different type of engine than the cards are designed to accelerate.

Anyway, as far as emulation goes, if you're running DF through the use of ANY other program, outside of just simply running DF.exe straight through Windows, you would be running it through emulation. Depending on the progmram, you are emulating different parts of the PC that DF is best on; VDMSound simply emulates an older SoundBlaster sound card, allowing sound and music for most older things. If you're running the game through DOSBox, you'd be emulating the entire system for DF, and that would SERIOUSLY take a massive chunk out of the performance; VDMSound still take a piece out, but it's often little enough to have the game run smoothly.
