Surprised Surprised Surprised

http://df-21.net/downloads/missions/cspear1.zip
(About 1.5 MB)

It's a little different than what I've done in the past, but I'm happy with how it came out. And, yes, it did take me 4 and a half years to make this "piece of [insert word of your choosing]."

Well, this thread is rather aptly named, if b "Hell" you mean Michigan, and the rest of the midwestern United States. (Trust CNN!)

I'll have to get this downloaded and give it a try back at home; Let's just hope the power's gone back there now as well... (already, phone line/DSL and water are both AWOL)

So, when does everybody think that we'll finally see the last episode of Cloudspear? (The Captain's Solitude) my guess is that by the time it's released, we'd better be downloading it at a fast rate, and blitz through it, before the apocalypse destroys us. Razz

Same here. I hate SG's puzzles, they're always too complex for me to solve on my own in less than an hour, lol. Please give me a hint about the crate puzzle thing around the start of the level! It keeps "Restoring Default Settings" and I have no clue what I'm doing. Sad

I got past that one...Open your overhead map, and go to the north-eastern sector of the crate area, which is the other end of the hallway from the crate itself.
Press the hammer switch in the booth with the window, so the magnet comes down and picks up the crate. Then go to the sector at the other end of the hall,
and press the left arrow switch behind the desk. The magnet will transport the crate to the other end. Go press the hammer switch again, to release the crate.
Jump up on top of the crate and use it to jump through a window into a dark room. Now, it's this four mode switch in here that puzzles me. What does it do??

I do not think the Restoring Default Settings actually does anything, except say "Restoring Default Settings." I may be wrong though..any advances on that??

I figured that part out too, and I beat the game last night. It's a lot shorter than I was expecting, and I had thought the three parts would all be in this one GOB. Oh well... good level nonetheless, and I can't wait for parts 2 and 3! Smile

I actually removed a good sized area a couple days ago (the part that appears in the first screenshot on the project page). It'll be used in part 2 or 3, though.

As for the crane puzzle, a couple hints:

The "Restoring Default Settings" switch does exactly what it says...

Notice the red colored, circular things on some of the walls. Play with the four directional switch and see what happens.

I trust that the puzzle used here is notably more challenging than the inner forcefield puzzle from Ironfort? Because that one was too easy, for those of us "geeks" that spend too much time using numerals that aren't in our "normal" decimal, Arabic fasion.

No, it's not more puzzling. I got confused at the DaI forcefield one and solved this Cloudspear one in a few minutes after I realized I wasn't trying to get the "Restoring Default Settings" switch to do anything special. Razz

So, SG, when might we see a progress page update with how much of Pt. II is completed? Wink If we start riding you about this now... it won't make a difference I know, but I'd like to think it will help you finish faster, hehe.

I actually loved the puzzles in this level and hope that SG puts puzzles similar to this in his future levels. They were a challenge, but at the same time they didn't take too long to figure out. The one that took the longest was the one that everyone keeps talking about, but I still think that it was a brilliant one.

Congrats on the level. It's another Kevin Klassic. However, I happen to have Dianoga-phobia, so that part shook me up a bit. But I love how the run down feeling was there throughout the level, especially the flooded areas. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

I'll update the project page in a few days when I start doing some work on the site. Part 2 is largely done already, so it should take me that long to get it together. (Yes, yes, I know, I know...)

Tried to make the puzzles a little more straight forward this time around (with the hardest one near the beginning in case anyone got stuck on it.)

WOW!!! I have dianoga-phobia too! Shocked

Well, strictly speaking, my life-long phobia is self-titled nonbiometaphobia = fear of any face where the eyes are in the wrong place.
Ie, fear of cyclops/triclops and everything in between...which is why I can't watch monsters inc. It's just wrong.
A face has to have TWO eyes in the RIGHT PLACE otherwise I get a nasty shock: I gasp in horror, look away on impulse, head spinning.
It's just something I've always had. I guess it's the way that the face looks at you. Just the sheer, brute ugliness of the look shocks me.

When I'm playing Dark Forces, I have to do a dianoga check before entering any liquid. This involves;
-Looking in the water to see if there are any eyes poking out (I'm alright when an eye is on its own, it's just when they attack, you see the whole of them)
-If that fails I throw a bomb down to check for rumbling/gurgling noises.
-If that fails I turn on LACDS and look at the map to track enemies.
-If that fails I open up the GOB file in DarkForge and CHECK!!!
Either way, I have to have LAREDLITE on whenever I'm near any potential dianoga-infested sites! The annoying thing is that in some levels they put them in water. That's why if it's liquid, I have to check.

Btw, has anyone played the Dark Forces Level, Galleria. I think it's the right one - the one which is just this huge art gallery.
There's a weird picture of three yellow aliens, each with three eyes. That freaked me out bigtime. I cannot play that level again.

Does anyone else have the same fear, or is it just me? No...I think it's just me. I'll stop hijacking the message boards then...(sorry, I just had to tell you all)
Aaaak! My site rank is a reeyees! I dread looking the mirror and seeing three eyes staring back at me! Anyway...La la-la la-la...Daisies! Rolling Eyes

Cloudspear Part 1 is a great mission!!! Cool Cool Cool

Finally finished the level, bravo!! The first big puzzle was a nice duh! moment after I figured it out. Yeah I used to have dianogaphobia, as I never got past Anoat sewers for the first 4 years I had the game (I used my cousin's finished game to skip ahead--dirty little 12 yr old cheater I was). Anyway now I think they're just funny little beasts who can use a good spanking. Wink

It's not the eyes. After Anoat I used to think it was because it was dark. But Cloudspear has them in fairly well lit areas.

It's the fact that you can't see them that freaks me out. I end up doing more damage to myself trying to clear them out with explosives (note to self: don't fire mortar at nearby walls old skool roller ) than the dianogas actually do to me.

I've played now third time through it and must say, Scape Goat, you've done a great job. The crate puzzle was not easy, but who likes easy puzzles in the first place? Very Happy

So that means you'd say they're about the same in difficulty? 'Cuz it took me all of about 7 seconds to figure out Ironfort's forcefield puzzle... Anyway, I think I just might give up trying to get DF working un-emulated on my new machine and just boot up my old one to play it... The problem's not in lacking the proper sound devices for DOS games as is the case for most people, but convincing Windows that more than DirectX is allowed to take any control away from it.

[note to self: thank goodness that I can always delete my most recent post... That lag was ugly]

Heh, it took you four years to make a mission, I'm still six years counting Very Happy

If my girlfriend down in michigan has anything to say about it chances are it will be longer too...

Nottheking had made a quick but detailed review of the level which reminded me that I really ought to have a thread for Cloudspear in the Level Reviews forum.

There is one now, and NTK's review is there, too.

'Twas a bit on the short side, and there was some dark places that annoyed me, as well as the diagonas (or both at once!) but overall I enjoyed the level. Smile

Well, I think I might have the rest of the forum beat, by having submitted my first level before ever posting here... (of course, that's the ONLY piece of my work that's made it to completion as of yet...)

I was about to ask what happened to the review... Oh, and the formatting tags in it were glitched when you transfered it; I might've reccomended simply moving the post over there, instead of quoting it... Oh well now.

Short?! It seemed too long to me, though I'll have to go through it again to get a better measure of it's length. (and unlike all the other levels I've played, I have yet to gather some statistics from WDFUSE)

Ha! Me too. My DF skills have seriously deteriorated.

All in all though, the level really does feel like one of a series.

I did definitely notice thatI'm not quite as good as I used to be in DF, since it's been nearly a year since I built my new machine. (which I still have yet to figure out how to play DF un-emulated, as I will not use any DOS or sound emulator) I can still sucessfuly play through each and every level I have on my old machine's hard drive on "hard" without cheating, (including my own SECBASE remake Razz) but definitely not as smoothly. I'm spending much more of my FPS time with Perfect Dark and Unreal Tournament 2004, with Half-Life2 coming on after I upgrade to a D3D9 GPU...
