Here are a couple pictures from my ultra-secret off-the-record project Patrick mentioned.

This shot is from the cutscenes in Dark Tide III.

And my last Christmas present for you:

http://www.thedarktide.com/music/nightfall.mp3

This clocks in at 7.2 mb. It's an mp3 version of the Dark Tide II: Nightfall stalk and fight music. It's part synthesized music, part acoustic. And it's for a little side project Patrick has been working on that some of you should see soon....

I hope you all have yourselves some happy holidays!

Nice. I'd love to see how it looks for real (as opposed to a still screenshot which is only kind of real... I guess).

I had heard something about your discussion, a year or so back, about tweaking with the CMP file to desaturate the colors at in increasing level as the distance grew... Now I see where you've put the effect to work. Looks great. Outdoor winter scenes > outdoor scenes > indoor scenes. Now all it needs is a sniper rifle, were it possible...(my favorite map of all-time would possibly be Mission 5-3 from Perfect Dark)

By the way, it seems that I have problems playing any of the Dark Tide music... the midis don't do anything at all, and the MP3 doesn't play well at all. It sounds thoroughly messed up, and it seems to not have a consistent bitrate, as WinAmp tells me.

Thanks guys. I'm glad you're liking them.

Nottheking:
Yeah, I'm finally implementing my 'fog' cmp idea. I actually have much, much better control over cmps than I used to, so I am quite pleased. The effect still needs a custom palette (especially for the grey browns of my trees.)

The midis - you're on your own for getting a player that can play midis well. I'd suggest downloading the files first, saving them to your hard drive, then playing them. If you can play other midi files, you should be able to play these.

The nightfall.mp3 is a variable bitrate mp3. Variable bitrate is suppossed to give you higher quality mp3 than normal bitrate. It goes through the sound file and assigns whatever bitrate it needs to to get a good quality sound. So if it can get away with a low bitrate, it does that, if it needs to use a higher bitrate, it does that. But there is nothing wrong with the mp3 if it is variable bit. WinAmp shouldn't have trouble with it (mine doesn't).

There is, however, some clipping on the original recording itself. That's due to some difficulty in the rendering of the midi into audio. The synthesis isn't perfect (I don't have the gear needed), but I don't think it's that bad, either.

Barry:
I promise I'll tell you about this little project sometime soon. It's not a big thing (yet) nor is it a big priority. It's just a little something I've worked on now and then. You can check out the same thing Patrick did. It's "grey."

Scape Goat:
You are wise to wonder how it looks 'for real' instead of just screenshots. I took full advantage of the fact that these are screenshots, going for the best looking still shots. In-game, the effect is a little different. The woods illusion is still there, but you can better tell the necessary limitations of the game (i.e. seeing the walls.) But I'm still hoping the illusion of an outdoor setting works better than, say, Jungles of Caldoun did.

I played through it. It's lovely, and though it is similar to the way the flora in Jungles... was created, it works much better. The fog is excellent too. Good work m'lad.

No, I think my problem might be something outside of what you think. You see, I first played it in the latest version of Quicktime, and then thought it might be a bug with it as to why it wasn't sounding right; Quicktime has not been good for me at all. Normally, WinAmp also plays everything flawlessly, from WAV to MID to MP3 and so on, but it sounded exactly the same as it did in quicktime. And perhaps I should've made it clear that the distortion became worse while it was changing bitrates. I'm going to try re-downloading it, and see if perhaps it was that somehow, the version I got was distorted.

I'm not sure if it matters, but I did listen to the files in QT on my Mac, under OS X.

I thought about begging you for the CMP and PAL used to make those winter shots, but thought better when I realized how much low light I'm using in the interior part of my level...though those exterior shots would be great, considering my current project is set in a snowscape.

Amazing work!

Ah damn it! I was going to put some screenshots up for the screen of the month, but this one already won Evil or Very Mad !

...Wait, does that count for January or February? Because if it's for January, I'll have some ready by tomorrow and we can run another one.

Hey everyone, post some screenies too! I hate being in competition with myself!

Smile WELLLLL... at the moment, it's a bit flexible. I hadn't updated the SotM (a.k.a. the feature formerly known as SotW) since mid-December, so I selected from shots posted between mid-December and today. I'll pick out February's SotM in about three weeks, so you still have plenty of time!

Well, perhaps we should change it to "Screen of the Day," as that seems to be a highly arbitrary term... It's even more flexible than what we've got, as Massassi hasn't had a SotD in 50 days now.

But if you're the only one in the competition, that makes the chances of you winning infinitely greater... Razz

Oh, and yes, I do think that it might be time to actually show some screens from the three levels I have in development... One of them is a bit immature at the moment (Operation Skyhook Phase 0), but both levels in my series both have a substantial amount of work done already.

Half of me wants to submit some screens to throw in obstacle in your way, and the other half of me wants to spoil your fun by letting you go without any competition aside from yourself. I'm not sure which side I should go with...

How is going with this ultra-secret project? Is it still active? These winter screenshots look so good, I'd love to see it released someday.

I think it was more of a showcase for his CMP skills. It was also a precursor of sorts for his Naboo Reactor Core.

Naboo reactor core? Mentioning it, can it be placed somewhere for download? (Or, am I missing the obvious link that is offered somewhere?)

I didn't find the download link for that level anywhere, still. There's only the link to the contest page, but no actual downloads.
Same for you, or is my computer developing a personality?

I think he was referring to the Naboo Core showcase level.
