So I've been doing this DF Editing thing for 3 years now. (Still no finished level I sux0rs Embarassed ) I thought I knew everything.

Well! How many people know about that obscure /1 switch you can use in BMPDF to compress your .bms? My 64.00 kb 256/256DFU sky texture became 15.00 KB! Talk about a massively useful command!

Does it reduce the quality of the BM though?

Yes I discovered this a souple of years back. The gob file for Dark Tide 4 would be twice the size it is now if I hadn't compressed the textures. It really makes a huge difference.

I'll have to figure out how to use that command myself once I get back to working with DF.

Of course, when it comes to loss-less compression, I know that such an image in PNG format (8-bit) would likely come up to around only 5-8 KB. Of course, technically, PNGs are not truely lossless, but it's almost impossible to tell the difference, and truly impossible to use them for DF, or view them with IE...

might be hijacking the thread but might as well not make a whole new one,
any idea how to use WDFUSE to turn a BMP into a BM? because the whole 2df thinggy and moving it from place to place and messing with the .pal and all that fun stuff is quite annoying after a while

BMPDF is the way to go, unfortunately it will only let you create bms up to a certain size.
If you have photoshop try and get your hands on Mattias Welanders BM plugin. It doesn't let you compress the bms, but it lets you save your work directly as bm files.
