Hey, this may be an old question but please bear with me as my editing experience is minimal:
I've been tinkering with editing some fme's and bm's and so forth but have had no luck converting them from bmp's to what I want them to be. I have MS Paint and a trial version of PaintShopPro X. When I save I make sure it's 256 colors.
I try to convert the bmp's with WDFUSE, but get the "External Exception C000001D" error message every single time.
I downloaded BMPDF and looked over the textfiles and so forth but I don't seem to understand what to do with those. I see the commands you are supposed to type, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that, and of course when I click the .exe it just pops up and then closes, so I know i'm missing something.
If anyone could help me get these things converted and usable I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks

As far as I remember, this is a bug in Wdfuse. You should use the DOS program that is distributed as a ZIP file named BMPDF. I always used it and never had problems. You will find it on the download page on this site.

Well that would make sense about that error being a bug in WDFUSE.
Yeah I've downloaded BMPDF from this site but like I said I'm not sure what to do. Is there a certain place I should store it? What do you do to actually use the program? As I said, I read in the text file about some of the commands used with the various BMPDF programs but I really don't understand what to do. Any help?

All the bmpdf exes should be stored in the same directory as the files you want to convert.
*Click the start button in the lower left of the screen.
*Click run.
*Type in 'command' and hit enter'
*Now you will be in Windows XP's DOS emulator.
Go to your dark directory, ie 'cd\' then 'cd dark'
*now assuming the files you want to edit are in your dark directory you can use 2df and df2 to inter-convert dark forces bms and fmes into windows bitmaps.
*type exit to leave DOS.

If you're not comfortable with the command prompt you can try looking up tutorials online or bribe a computer nerd to make you a right-click shortcut for automatically converting BMs and FMEs.

Or you could type the commands in Notepad, save it as a *.bat file in the same folder as BMPDF, and run that. That would save you from having to type the full directory path each time, if it's something really long like c:\docume~1\nikana\mydocu~1\programs\games\lucasa~1\starwa~1\darkfo~1\utilit~1\bmpdf\.
(Edit: run the *.bat file, not BMPDF.)

Hey thanks a lot guys, that helped out quite a bit. Little by little i'm getting better at this stuff. I could probably crank out a level now, but it would probably only be in the quality range of super amazing awesome levels like the famed Coober or Mines. Yes!

Ha ha, hmm. For a trilogy we would need some sort of premise. It can't just be the Coober, Mines,(insert name here) trilogy. They need to be connected somehow, like the "Laughable Fun Crap" Trilogy or something.

I was always pretty fond of Planet Natek, weird level-wise.

Actually, if you could produce something along the 'Kaulity Levvel' of Mines, you'd be gauranteed instant fame here. (whatever THAT'S worth :p)
At any rate, give editing a shot. Post some screenies, soak up some advice, delete all your old work on the map and start again. At the least, it's what I did, and it was sucessful in keeping a level in the going for about 3+ years now!
