I have a notebook computer that just freaked me out a bit ago. I was online and it suddenly shut down totally and completely. The battery didn't run down because I was plugged into the wall and the power didn't go out. Then I tried like 5 times to turn it on, and it would turn on for 1/2 second then turn back off. Obviously its working allright now, but can anyone tell me why this might have happened?

-_-
Make sure your plugs are firmly in...?
I dunno. Try browsing the mnaufacturer's website, and look for a listing of known problems with laptops, see if yours is on there.

Blaster virus? How do I know if I have it? This only happened that once... what about overheating? could that cause a shutdown?

Macs are just more stable and 99% of internet viruses don't work on them since they use a .exe file. And as for the mice, the system is not set up for two buttons, so it is not a big issue, although once in a while it is neccesary and then you simply "control+click"

Overheating? Maybe. Are there utilies for Macs to monitor temperature, like PCs have?

The blaster virus should be easy to detect with the task manager. Close it, than uninstall it. My brother, "The Amazing Knifeboy", managed to easily clean it off of a computer at his high school, after the district technology director was brilliant enough to infact ALL of the systems in the district...
As for overheating, most notebooks are well-equiped to prevent that. However, malfunctioning in some of the parts (especially any of the fans) can throw this balance out of whack. Also, adding expansions of any sort increases the heat level.
As for power, any loss in the circuit will result in a complete, if instantaneous, loss of power. If the shutdown occured when the notebook was moved/jostled/whatever, this might be your best bet.
Feel free to ignore any of this, I probably got it all wrong.
(And yes, I've left the 'inflate post count' mode)

Oh, take your petty disagreements someplace else. I'm sure we can agree that my concerns are slightly higher than what kind of mouse I have. Someone split the topic, please?

Of course, there's Linux which runs on a variety of hardware including Macs and PCs, but it's not a real OS, is it. Neither is MacOS, and by extension Macs aren't real hardware, either.

To keep this thread on track, have you found anything that would suggest anything of what I've mentioned, Alex?

I ignored it. You got it all wrong.
J/K... I opened my task manager and saw no sign of the blaster virus. As to circuit loss, I was lying on the floor with my computer in front of me, I did have my hands on the keyboard but I was hardly jostling it. Also, would a circuit loss cause the comouter to not be able to be turned on for about 1/2 hour, then correct itself (not condescending, it might for all I know. So, would it?).

By "turn on", I presume you mean that the power switch can be hit, without and the computer will remain off.
Hmm... If some connections STAY out for a while, then you might not be able to turn it on for that time... Ignore this, because concept is essentially worthless to any computer that is not a desktop several years old...
As far as a virus, If the task manager in 2000/XP doesn't list it, then you don't have one activated. It's too bad that some 99.9% of windows users fail to take advantage of this powerful feature...
I would say your best bet of the three would be overheating/power draw. Do any of the parts feel exceptionally warm, and does the computer seem to not perform as its specs/previous performance indicate? This can be a double whammy, because too much power draw generates more heat, and takes away power from whatever fans or cooling devices may be present.
My brother's old computer had a CD-RW, a DVD, a LS-120, a Floppy, and two hard drives drawing off a 250 Watt supply... it ran like a Cely 233, and would crash after about three hours, and couldn't be restarted until the temperature dipped below 130F. Although the sensor was probably broken...

Well, it isn't hot NOW, as this happened a week ago and hasn't happened since. I'm not too worried now, since it isn't happening with any frequency.
