I say The Ring is the best one I've seen ever, bar none. I thought the Exorcist and the Shining were too corny and dated.

The Birds.
Now that I look at it it's not really freaky, but the first time I saw it I locked my parakeets in the spare bedroom for two days, only coming in to feed and water them.

I'm not a big fan of scary movies. I saw the Ring and it freaked me out. After thinking about it though, the whole story was kinda lame. Signs was really good, though that was almost more of a suspence thriller.

I hate to break it to you Taylor, but most of the best horror films are made on lower budgets. Expensive FX do not a great horror film make.
I haven't seen The Ring yet, so I couldn't say if it was good. I know it got a lot of positive response, although I have heard many say it was inferior to the original Japanese film. I also look forward to 28 Days Later when it is released this month on DVD.

1. The Exorcist (Special Edition)
2. The Thing (Remake 1980)
3. Aliens
4. Creature (White Shark) TV Miniseries
5. Alien
6. Alien Ressurection
Now I'm only getting into video games because I ran out of scary movies.
7. Silent Hill 1
8. Resident Evil 2
9. Dino Crisis
10. Silent Hill 3

I thought Signs was a pretty scary movy\ie, even though it was more suspense than horror. I prefer movies that scare you with what you DON'T see.

Signs=not scary and actually pretty stupid
The Ring=not even scary, just mildly freaky
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the new one)=Scariest movie I've ever seen, and is probably the only movie I've ever seen that really put me on edge.

Patrick I like your list.
I just went up to Michigan and met Tom Savini for the 1st time. He was at a small town's local Haunted Fair Grounds for some reason handing out autographs, so me and my girl friend headed up there and lucked out! As fate would have it, the majority of the people that were there were from the "I Know What You Did Last Summer/ Feat Dot Com" generation and had NO idea who he was, so I got to sit and chat with him for a couple of hours.
One thing I found out is that he is in the Dawn Of The Dead remake coming out next year, and is supervising as his students do the special effects. Another important thing to note is that Mr. Romero has the script for Night Of The Living Dead 4 completely written, and they are just waiting to shoot the film. Once again as in the original Dawn, Savini will star in it, and will supervise the effects.
There was SOO much else I wanted to ask him, but when your at the feet of a god, you get nervous and forget to ask things. I did manage to ask what the hell was up with him being in Children Of The Living Dead, and he said,"throw it away!!!" Turns out like a lot of films, he did not know it was going to be so utterly crappy till after he signed the contract to be in it, and he emphasised that it was not one of his students who made it either cause I had to ask.
He has a Haunted House and a school for effects right next door to each other in Penn State if anyone is interested.
And now for my horror list, sorry I have too many favorites, so here are a few.
Re-Animator
In The Mouth Of Madness
The Exorcist (un-cut)
Texas Chainsaw 1 (both versions) and 2.
The Brood
Shivers (un-cut)
Return Of The Living Dead (1 only!!)
The Night Of The Living Dead Trilogy (un-cut)
Evil Dead 1 and 2
Friday The 13th 4 and 6

In Dreams
Blair Witch
Prince Of Darkness
The Thing
Dagon
Night Of The Living Dead (Tom Savini Remake)
The Howling
Dog Soldiers
Cemetary Man
Castle Freak
From Beyond
Horror Express
The Changeling
Scanners
The Crazies

Willard
Spontanious Combustion

Lord Of Illusions
Raw Head Rex
Event Horizon
The Ring 1 and 2 (jap version as I have not watched the American remake yet) The Shining (not the crappy arse made for TV Stephen

Okay, it's not a movie, but I think an honorable mention should be made for all The Simpsons "Treehouse of Terror episodes." I especially remember "The Shinning."

Signs was a little freaky, like the part where he was sticking the knife under the door to see what was in that room...
Oh ya, and for those who love the Exorcist, you HAVE to see part 3 (the true sequal by the original guy).

Hey, XDelusion- I like your list too. I forgot a few of the ones there, and I'm kicking myself for forgetting Hellraiser. The Exorcist 3 was really pretty good (the old lady on the ceiling freaks me out), but lacked the artistry of the first. I always tell people it is to the original as 2010 is to 2001. Pretty good, but not truly exceptional.
I love Scanners, too, but I always recommend it to people as sci-fi. I am ashamed to say I still haven't seen Re-animator.
I'm really drooling with jealousy that you got to meet Tom Savini. That's great news about the Dawn remake, and Night 4. I had no idea that their were further plans for the series. I hope Romero can think of new angles to portray in the Living Dead films. The first was so groundbreaking and with great social commentary, as was the second, but the third felt tired, with too many angry, squabbling despicable characters that I couldn't care about.

Day Of The Dead was still pretty damn kool, aside of the Black guy and his side kick being REALLY kool and laid back, a snap load of some of Tom's best gore ever, there was also the new element that perhaps the zombie's could be trained...
...I wonder if this is forshadowing something that might pop up in part 4?
No doubt the underlying message was much stronger in Dawn though, which is still my personal favorite of them all, I call it a Zombie Drama.
Exorcist 3's strong point to me was the whole story, how he lept into the priest's body, and slowy restored the cells in his brain and what not over the years so that he could eventually speak, ect. The whole way that movie was thought out really got me going! Not the same approach as in part 1, but still a VERy worthy sequal.
If you ever want to meet Tom, he gives a seminar at the first day of his school over in Penn state, plus he shows up every two weeks to make sure everything is on scedual. You can set up an appointment to visit as a showdow student one day, and I figure you can have it arranged on a day he is there...
...it's worth a shot if you live close by, I'm in Ohio, so I'll definatly head over there sooner or later.
