So I now have a sweet new iMac and I like it a lot, but I found out a problem and it's really bumming me out. I thought with a new graphics card (Radeon HD 2600 Pro) that I would have pretty good compatibility with the games that my Mac Mini had on it.

Well people... imagine my disappointment soon to follow....

So I boot WindowsXP and reinstall Jedi Knight, Mysteries of the Sith, and X-Wing Alliance. I begin to play Jedi Knight and enable the 3d Acceleration to make it pretty and less taxing, then... the screen dies. The only way it recovers is by system reboot.

Tried mysteries of the sith and XWA but got the same results, even after updating drivers and such. They simply don't work unless you run it from hardware (which blows).

I love the computer as fast and new as it is, but this really bums me out.

Woe is me old skool frown

Anyone else have this problem with the new Radeon cards? Unfortunately (Damn you Apple! I'm losing faith in you!!!) this one is integrated as well so I can't replace it.

I am however pleased that Jedi Academy runs MUCH MUCH better than it did before, so it's not all bad Mr. Green . But still working on getting Counter Strike Source to work a bit smoother.

Old games, new computer. My iMac is older so I can't replicate your problem. You'll have to fiddle with all the graphics settings to see if maybe there's a problem feature that could be disabled. You could also try unofficial drivers:

I've been trying to download the catalyst driver (which will hopefully help with some things) but my internet has been crappy lately for whatever reason. So I have to download the drivers here at work. Hopefully things will work out, otherwise I have to run it from hardware mode.

I guess in the longrun it'll be okay if I can't, because I'm more concerned about DF running (which it does Mr. Green , and even better than on the Mac Mini). Don't know about DarkXL, but again, because I can't download the stuff I need to be able to run it.

Oh well, such is life. And if worse comes to worse, I'm not getting rid of the Mini anytime soon (It's a good portable computer you see) so I know for sure it works great on that machine.

It's not. But thanks to Bootcamp, Mac users with intel processors can dual boot Windows and OSX and it runs natively. I meant to have windows there for more versatility but at the moment I use it primarily for gaming.

Yep. I use mine mostly for games as well. GeForce 8800 GS and 3.06 Intel dual core runs everything as well as a comparable "real" PC. Just finished Bioshock and it was sweet.

I can get Half Life Episode 2 and Portal to run decently on my computer which is less powerful, and these are games that require some hardcore graphic cards to run them at their best.

Come to think of it, I don't see why I bothered getting them when I already have the Orange Box for the Xbox.

Either way, I had to tweek the settings a little and run it at a smaller resolution, but at least it runs as smooth as it can.

The stress test from Counter Strike Source showed an average FPS of 220 Shocked

Eh... Change your version of Catalyst to an OLDER one. That might solve your crashes. There were a few bad apples in the past couple years of Catalyst releases that had that sort of problem. Specifically, with certain video cards in XP, it would cause the computer to crash in some manner any time it tried to initialize Direct3D. It'd work with OpenGL fine, just not Direct3D. So the only way in that case is to go to ATi's website, and download a different version of Catalyst for XP.

I remember reading a while back that version 7.2 or lower worked pretty well, so I might give that a go later on.

I thought it was funny, but then again the operating system I use is named after something I might buy at Home Depot--not Vons.
