Hey, ive just purchased a new windows vista x64 with home edition
The first thing i did was try to play dark forces on it
I used DOSbox, and everything worked out fine
The only problem was LOCAL.MSG had the read only tag
when i tried to take it off, it said access is denied
how can you get permission to take the tag off?

Dark Forces wasn't designed to run from a CD. CDs are always read-only, so the read-only flag will always be set and cannot be changed. Copy the files to your hard drive and then remove the read-only tag from them all. Or better yet, run the install program (from within DOSBox, of course, and be sure to mount the install location as well as the CD drive) and do it PROPERLY..
If you're not trying to use it from a CD, then chances are if it's giving you this error, it's doing it on a drive letter other than the one you installed Vista on. You'll have to manually grant yourself access to all other drives before Vista will allow you to change files on them (because they're using whatever security settings they had on them before you installed Vista, which Vista doesn't recognise... I had the same problem).
I don't know if you CAN fix this problem without screwing with third-party tools. Home editions of Windows rip out all of the security management UI for files. The security UI be still accessible in safe mode if you log on as Administrator (it is in XP Home). If so, you'll want to right click the file (or to fix all files on the drive, the drive itself), click security, then Advanced. Then use the UI to Take Ownership of the file (or drive), then grant the Users group Full Control. That should allow you access to the file. If you're dogin it for the drive, Windows might ask you if you want the changes to apply to all "subitems" or contained items/files/folders. Say Yes. Then wait while it marks each and every file individually.
