a) Incoherent posts don't get too many replies.
b) You're using an AMD, and as any fool can tell you, AMD sucks.
c) DF, not being a Microsoft-approved program, won't run on Windows.
d) DF, not being a Win32 or Win64 application, is fake.

However, I go on the basis of competition, and that means until Mattias gets Dark 3D released, he can't criticize the original DF (and DOS) much...

This just confuses the hell out of me. DF runs FINE in Windows. What's the big deal? And there's that "shut down to DOS" option too. Remember that thing?

I have an AMD with Windows XP. I use VDMSound (because it's XP) and everything is fine (except the sound quality is bad, bleh)...

korel, make sure as many other programs as possible are closed when running DF, there's no telling what impact these programs could have.

Try reinstalling DF, that might help, and if it doesn't, I don't know what to say, except that you are using an unsupported operating system (95).

On your other comp, if it runs XP, consider getting VDMSound or SoundFX for sound under XP... although DF should work without it (just no sound), so I can't imagine what your problem is...

In this case the error message wasn't very helpful to me, but thank yuo for including it anyways, as well as the specs of your system. Some n00bs just say "help i cant get df to run wat do i do" and leave it at that.

And Kir Kanos, since NT systems (like 2000 and XP) aren't based on DOS, there is no reboot to DOS option on our systems.

The most I can think about your problem is that you should make sure your instalation (and your disk) are complete and undamaged.

In case anybody's wondering why DF seems to run under WINDOWS, when it is a DOS program, is that DARK.exe refernces a program VDM.exe (or something like that; I can't check right now). Normally, DOS can't give ennough RAM for DF to run right, so DF uses a DOS emulator to get enough.

My guess is that you may not have that .exe file completely there. Check your DF folder, and tell us all of the files in there that end in .EXE, if you're not sure if you have them all.

Used to work fine on my AMD, too, but our Windows expert says AMD is sub-standard.

'"Money"'? Fake money? Even if you mean real money (then why did you quote the word? wtf?), how the phrik does that help?

Don't see that in XP. And don't blame me, our Windows expert says all those things.

No, Windows has a built-in DOS emulator. It's called command.com. Razz

So technically, it IS running under DOS, but DOS is running under Windows as well.

The above does not apply to NT/2000/XP. Those are not built on DOS technology, they have a substandard emulator instead, which is why often sound does not work for DOS games.

Also, I already said, XP has no Reboot to DOS function, because XP HAS no DOS... only the emulator, called a "Command Prompt" just, not DOS.

I hate to break it out to you, but COMMAND.COM IS DOS. I know this, because I have used computers from before Windows became common at all. COMMAND.COM is the actual program of DOS, the command prompt.

The_Mega_ZZTer wrote:

DOS does not multitask like Windows does; when an application under DOS takes resources, DOS completely backs off, and simply ceases to accept more commands while the application is running. Thus, Windows, in order to prevent it from having to shut itself down, comes with an emulator that DOES NOT emulate DOS; it emulates a complete operating environment, allocating a specified amount of memory to another instance of DOS, since DOS cannot run if an application is taking up some of the memory it recognizes as its own.

Yes, those come with a different program... Microsoft failed to realize that the main reason people still use DOS is for GAMES, and have put in a version of DOS that cannot be allocated all of the system memory.

As I said earlier, the command prompt IS DOS. An emulator doesn't fake a program; an emulator is essentially an interface (albeit one that is used like an application) that arranges memory and other resources so that a program (or a different incarnation of it) can run, despite any conditions that would normaly prevent it from running, because every OS requires that it gets ALL of the potential resources under its control; otherwise, it isn't an OS (please do not confuse this with Mattias's definition of an OS). The emulator simply hides the remaining resources from the program.

I may have been somewhat unclear in the explaination above, but it is more or less correct, despite whatever anybody else says. The only exceptions might be where I use the incorrect term.

I don't mean to offend you (or label you as ingnorant, stupid, etc.) by saying all this, ZZTer, I was just trying to clear up some confusion...

Yes, I've considered getting an old PowerMac to run some of the older Lucasarts games...

...Those dual-G5 boxes are nice, but I'd hate to shell out a few grand (Which I simply don't have lying arround at the moment) for one, when none of the sweet-looking games out/to be released (Halo, HL2, D3) come availible for it... And my brother found that I could rebuild my machine into an Althlon XP 2700 (or better!), with a large quantity of DDR, and a RADEON 9800 Pro for only a few hundred dollars for the whole upgrade... And I'd stand a chance of running DOOM3 at above 30fps...

While yes, most often, Windows runs a semi-acceptible dos emulator, it all depends on the SF (Suck Factor)

Basicaly, major contributors to the SF are computers, reality, subatomic particles, and you.

Try reducing your SF.
