Based on the classic Star Wars arcade game. ("Red Five standing by.")

Nice reticles everyone. As for your's, Magic_Al, I'll probably recolor it white and otherwise leave it as is. The reason is so that people can then choose which color they want it to be themselves.

Magic_Al: You know there are vector image formats, right? SVG is the most common one.

SVG support on the Mac is a little limited so I didn't think of it first.

If a vector format was supported in DarkXL, the user might scale the reticle size just like they can scale the HUD map. Cool reticle animations like zooming into place when you switch weapons, or slowly resizing while you charge the secondary fire of the pistol, or being rotated parallel to the ground and pulsating to indicate the predicted splash of a thrown detonator or concussion rifle blast, could appear smooth without requiring larger bitmaps.

Agreed, that would be an interesting extended feature. A reticle that predicted the splash of the TDs and Concussion Rifle would be really neat, if not a little too easy. It'd sure be fun though . . .
But just so you know, the pistol doesn't charge on DF Razz Unless of course, someone implements it once lucius makes weapons scripted. Since mouse look will completely change game balance anyway, we might as well make it a little more interesting.

That would be an interesting feature but not for the next build. Smile You can add it to the Issue Tracker as a requested feature if you want.

Good point, I haven't gone through and added Magic_Al's entries yet. The first one is easy to fix but the others won't be usable for now. I will implement a more robust reticle system later - when I implement weapon scripts - but the system is pretty simple right now, sorry. I should have identified the problem earlier but I've been preoccupied the last couple of days.

I'm getting the build ready so I'll be putting in the reticles that will be in the build in the next few days, so any reticles you want in should be finished/fixed before then. Any others can be put in later when the weapon scripts are done. Thanks everyone who made contributions. The next build will have a credits screen / documentation and I'll be adding in the contributers as appropriate. So you guys will get some credit for your work. Smile

I was thinking that maybe reticles should be in a vector format so they will scale properly with resolutions.

Otherwise you're going to want super high res bitmaps, no silly 32x32 squares.

[Edit: Oh we already went through that... >_>]

To compensate for the loss of Magic Al's crosshairs, here's another set that should get gamers nostalgic:

If you have played one of the games in the X-Wing space sim series, you should recognize them. The first is modeled after the reticles in the earlier games (X-Wing, TIE Fighter) and the second after the last game of the series (X-Wing Alliance).

Of course, the cannon dots, target lock indicators and threat lights aren't there, since they would be pointless or inoperative. It's just the targeting reticle.

I tried to compensate for irregular shapes appearing smaller than regular shapes by thinking of 32x32 as a 1024 area limit, but I blew past that too.

I'm not sure how to get the transparent borders right but here are all the shapes as SVG so anyone can adapt them.
