|
|
I haven't played DF since I was like 10, and I just can't figure out how to get it to run again. I get sound FX but no music, and the sound i do get is terrible. Also, is there any way to remap the keys, because, frankly, the default keymap gives me a conniption.

If you are on NT, 2000, or XP, sound emulation will be terrible. You can try searching for and downloading VDMSound 2.1.0 beta.
A more complex solution is to download Virtual PC 2004 SP1... offered free by Microsoft... and run Dark Forces under an MS-DOS 6.2 virtual machine. I find this offers the best performance.

Yeah but how do you mess with the controls? Is there a way to get full mouse look?

I don't think that you can reconfigure the buttons, and unfortunately there is no full mouse look in DF.

No mouse look. Fortunately you have auto aim which helps make up for this.
Buttons can be reconfigured through SETUP.EXE

You can also use Dos Box for these older games, which will a much smaller download than Virtual PC, and will not require installing another operating system.
This is what GOG.COM and Steam are doing to get the older DOS games running well under the newer operating systems. The older titles are packaged with Dos Box.
Dos Box will require a text file (dosbox.conf) in the correct folder, in order to get it to work correctly.
If you are unsure how to do this, you should be able to find plenty of information on how to do this by searching within these forums, or using Google.
Regarding Mouse Look, unfortunlately, unless you use a third-party key remapper (I've seen some that allow you to remap Joystick to keyboard keys), as long as you are using the original dark.exe to run the game, there is no way to enable it.
DarkXL does support it though.
